The sum ­ mer institute, she noted, is the first o f its kind in the nation and is seen as a possible model for other Head Start teacher-training programs throughout the c o u n try -”helping pre-school chil­ dren from low-income, minority fam i­ lies to acquire a lifelong love o f science and m ath.” The 20 women who attended the month-long institute at M arylhurst this summer, are currently applying the b a­ sic scientific knowledge acquired dur­ ing their campus experience in their Head Start classes in the Portland m et­ ropolitan area. Marylhurst College will present a similar institute next summer for a sec­ ond group of Head Start teachers.
