Lewis & Clark College To Honor Edward
Perkins, U.S. Ambassador To The United
Nations, As Distinguished Alumnus
are pleased to recognize his accom­
plishments and to honor him as D istin ­
guished Alum nus.”
Perkins, a specialist on A frican
affairs, was appointed as the nation’ s
20th ambassador to the United Nations
last February. Previously, Perkins was
the State Department’s director-gen­
eral from 1989 to 1992, ambassador to
South A fric a from 1986 to 1989 and
ambassador to Liberia from 1985 to 86.
He also served in Ghana and as director
o f West A frican affairs at the State
D epartm ent. He speaks Japanese,
French and Thai.
Perkins was bom in Sterlington,
La. He moved to Portland when he was
a yo un gste r and graduated from
Jefferson High School. His mother, Tiny
Holmes, s till lives in Portland and de­
scribes her son as dedicated to books.
Perkins served in the U.S. A rm y
and Marines, including a tour in the
Korean War. He attended Lew is &
Clark College in 1953 and was its
commencement speaker in 1988. He
earned his bachelor’ s degree from the
university o f Maryland and master’ s
and doctoral degrees in public adm in­
istration from the University o f south­
ern C alifornia at Los Angeles.
W hile w ith the Arm y and A ir
Force Exchange Service, Perkins
served as chief o f personnel in Taipei,
Taiwan, from 1958 to 1962. From
1962 to 1966, he was deputy ch ie f and
then ch ie f o f personnel and adm inis­
tration in Okinawa. He joined the For­
eign Service in the 1970s.
Charles H ill, a top aide to form er
Secretary o f State George Shultz, who
is now at the Hoover Institute, de­
scribed Perkins as a “ m agnificent in­
d ivid ua l” who could say much w ith
few words, according to an article in
The Oregonian.
“ Perkins ju s t says that’s the way it
w ill be,” H ill said. “ When he takes a
position...you know he has great moral
weight behind it.”
“ He made clear exactly where he
stood,” said Randall Robinson, whose
group, Trans A frica , was involved in
the U.S. anti-apartheid movement.
“ And he did things no U.S. ambassa­
dor (to South A frica) had ever done.”
“ Diplom acy is my profession,”
Perkins said. “ I hope to convince ev­
ery American citizen that, the broad­
est sense, in the com petitive interna­
tional, political, business and social
environm entsof the future,diplom acy
must be the profession o f each citizen
as w ell.”

Six Way Tie For PIL Lead

The Jefferson democrats and five
other P IL football teams are in a flat-
footed tie for first place with 3 -2 records.
Jefferson got its third win o f the
season w ith a 22-8 v ic to ry over
Marshall. Other teams that have 3-2
records are: Benson, Cleveland, Madi
son, Marshall and Wilson.
Benson scored a 21-14 w in over
Madison; Cleveland over Franklin 18-
10; Grant got by Lincoln 22-6, and it
was W ilson rollin g over Roosevelt 40
12.
Jefferson and Marshall were in a
tight game until M ark Burke threw a
6 3 -y a rd to u c h d o w n pass to Joe
Robertson, and Hakeem.
M cCallister put the lights out for
Marshall w ith a 59 yard run. Lionel
Clegg ran for a two point conversion for
the final count.
This week the six way tie w ill be
broken. Benson and Jefferson meet F ri­
day night at C iv ic Stadium at 6 p.m.,
followed by Cleveland and Grant at 8
p.m On Friday Wilson w ill play at
Franklin. Madison plays at Marshall on
Saturday at 12:30 p.m., and Lincoln
w ill visit Roosevelt at 1:30 p.m.

alumna who has achieved distinction in
his or her chosen field and has rendered
outstanding service to country or com ­
m unity.

Play o f the Week.
M cC allister was picked for his out­
standing play in the Demo’s 22-8 vic­
tory over the M arshall Minutemen. A ll
M cCallister did was carry the ball three
times fo r 81 yards - on one he had a 59
yard touchdown run, on another he
caught a 16 yard pass. However, this
team player led Jefferson on both o f­
fense and defense. M cCallister also has
650 all purpose yards so far this season
- 220 yards rushing, 178 yards recov­
ering, and 252 yards o f return.
The Democrat’ s football coach,
M ark Pinder, says M cCallister is a team
leader and a big play man which they
need in a player that goes both ways.
