KMHD Sets Date For Fall Fund Drive KMHD, the jazz-format radio sta tion operating from the Mt. Hood Com munity College campus, will hold a fall fund drive Oct. 2-11. John R ice, KMHD general manager, said the fund-raising event is needed to al low the station to maintain and upgrade the equipment and broadcast 20 hours a day. “KMHD is licensed to Mt. Hood Community College since we are a broadcasting lab for the radio students,” said Rice. “That funding covers a por tion of our expenses - equivalent to ten hours a day, five days a week through the academic year. But we’re a full time jazz station, operating 20 hours a day every day of the year. That’s why we need to turn to our listeners for their support.” Last fall’s radiothon was success ful, said Rice, and generated over $25,000 in operating funds. The spring fundraiser was also a successful one, allowing KMHD to operate throughout the summer. But maintenance and upgrades are ongoing needs, said Rice, as is the station’s need to increase its staff. KMHD has six staff members; the na tional average for FM stations is 15 staff members. KMHD developm ent associate Kevin Tippett says the quality of the station is gauged by what listeners hear. “Where programming is concerned, this station is outstanding. A Federal Com m u nications C om m ission official stopped by one day after hearing KMHD. According to him, this place is a model for col lege-licensed stations across the country,” said Tippett. The need to add to and upgrade equipment was expressed by both the station’s engineer, Clint Locey, and the music director/chief announcer, Greg Gomez. “We need upgrades for most of the broadcasting equipment, especially microphones,” said Locey. Gomez said hisability to respond to the jazz community is dependent on other typesofequipmentas well. “When a new release comes in, I need to review it on equipment in my office before giving it to the on-air staff for broadcast. And when and artist comes to town or one of the talents in the Northwest has a new release, I can arrange for an on-air interview. All this requires a computer, a fax machine and telephones. It takes a lot to make a quality radio station and keep it on the air,” said Gomez. The phone number contributors should call during the ten-day radiothon is 667-7123. For more information contact John Rice at 667-7635 or Tom Costello at 667-7233. "The funniest picture in a long time. You'll collapse with laughter." -Gene Shalit,TODAY SHOW B illy C r y st a l M r .
