Trail Blazers Announce 1992
Preseason Schedule
Portland Trail Blazer’s Terry Porter
Urges Library Usage In New TV PSA
T rail Blazers are supporting l i
braries in a new national television
public service announcement (PSA)
produced in cooperation w ith the Na
tional Basketball Association (N B A )
and the American l ibrary Assixaation
(A L A ).
The 30-second PSA, shot at the
Tigard (Orc.) Public Library, stars Trail
Blazers’ guard Terry Porter and en
courages children and adults to "check
out the action” at the public library.
“ I was pleased to rediscover the
public library,” said Poler. “ I had fo r
gotten how much is there and sec that
now, there’ s so much more besides
books that you can use lo r free. I have
to say I was impressed.”
The initial idea olThe T ra il Blaz
ers PSA came from the Washington
County Cooperative Library Services
(W C C LS), a network o f 11 local l i
braries in Oregon, governed by seven
cities, a nonprofit association and the
county. W CCLS also includes school
and special libraries.
“ WE felt that the image o f a much -
admired professional athlete on a w ell-
known team, talking about the useful
ness o f public libraries, would impact
both here in the Portland area and
else w he re ,” said Peggy F o rc ie r,
WCCLS coordinator. “ We hope that
the PSA w ill inspire more people to
lake advantage o f the resources o f
today’ s public libraries.”
A L A w ill distribute the spot to the
top 50 television stations nationwide.
It w ill be available to local stations, by
request, from the A L A Public In fo r
mation O ffice, 50 E. Huron St., C h i
cago, IL 60611.

Meet The Newest Blazers!
In the next four weeks I w ill cover
the newest players to jo in the Portland
T ra il Blazers this summer. And now,
introducing:
Rod Strickland
Rod Strickland, ranked among the
N B A ’ s top point guards the past two
seasons, signed a free agent contract
w ith the Portland T ra il Blazers in June.
Strickland ranked fifth in the league
in assists last season w ith an 8.6 aver
age, to go along w ith a scoring average
o f 13.8 points in 57 games as the San
Antonio Spurs’ flo or leader. The 6-
foot-3 four-year veteran tied fo r 12th
w ith Terry Porter on the league’ s assist
lis t w ith an 8.0average during the 1990-
91 season.
“ Rod Strickland has proven to be a
very good point guard, one o f the best
penetrators in the game and terrific on
the fastbreak,” said G e o ff Petrie,
Portland’ s senior vice-president o f op
erations in making the announcement.
“ His presence in our lineup gives us
much more fle x ib ility among our guards
than we have had before. He has made
strides on an o ff the court during the
past year and should have a bright fu
ture w ith the Blazers.
“ O bviously, w e’re excited to be
able to sign a player o f Strickland’s
a bility. We are always seeking to im
prove our team and the addition o f Rod
Strickland is a significant step in that
ongoing process.”
In four seasons w ith the New York
K n ic k s and San A n to n io Spurs,
Strickland has averaged 11.4 points,
6.3 assists and 27.4 minutes, shooting
.464 from the fie ld and .669 at the foul
line, in 278 games. His 3.67 assist/
turnover ratio through four seasons was
bettered by only six players during the
1991-92 N B A season.
A fter sitting out the first 24 games
o f last season w ith a contract holdout,
Strickland averaged 13.8 points, 8.6
assists, 2.07 steals and 36.0 minutes for
the Spurs. He poured in a career-high 28
points against Indiana on February 6
and distributed a career-high 19 assists
at Minnesota on March 3. He charted 22
double-doubles and scored in double-
figures 48 times, including topping the
20-point mark on eight occasions.
“ A t the end o f this past season one
o f the needs we identified fo r our team
was someone who could play point
guard behind Terry Porter,” said Blaz

W e’ re fortunate that our point guard,
