£
rand new-lunk junkies arc
coasting high. The latest name
sending out a buzz (in the
streets, over the airwaves, on the charts)
is Biv IO a label, not a band, run by
youngest in ch arge pop m obster
Michael “ Biv” Bivins, who is also a
member of platinum performers Bell
Biv DeVoe and New Idilion.
New York based and Motown dis
tributed Biv IO was formed this July.
with a blueprint for success through
eclecticism and adventure. “W e’re
gonna be pulling out good records and
great artists,” says Bivins. “W e’ll come
off because wc won’t compromise our
instincts.”
So far, Bivins’ instincts haven’t
been wrong. Drop your jaw in awe of
what he’s discovered, imaged and guided
towards gold and platinum paradise in
Planet Pop Boy/ Il Men, another Bad
Creation, M.C. Brains. These artists are
managed by Bivins, through Biv Enter
ta in m e n t, an d sig n e d to M o to w n
Records.
“ Michael has just been so on,” says
M otow n president and CEO Jhery;
Busby. “ He has an uncanny ability to
recognize talent and market them .”
Busby views Bivins, 24, as “a young
executive who can hit the long ball,” and
calls M otown’s involvement with Biv
10 “an arrangem ent centered in belief
and trust - not a high-risk venture.”
The opening salvo o f Biv 10 re
leases is East Coast Family Vol.
1, a complication o f rem ixes (by
Boyz II Men and Another Bad Creation)
and new jam s, including “Listen Closely
(Bozack),” by Tam rock, and “All These
W anna B e’s (Tease),” by another Bad
Creation.
The centerpiece o f the album is the
first single and video “ 1-4-A11-4-1,”
which brings together Biv’s latest young
discoveries: Tam Rock, W hytgize,C ale
Brock,Tom Boyy, 1010, Yvette Brown,
Hayden Hajdu, Fruit Punch, Lady V,
Mark, Rico & Finesse and Anthony
Velasquez.
Il’s from this pool o f prom ise that
Biv 10 will draw its ammunition for
aural assault. With a youthful confi
dence learned from role m odels like
Andre Harrell, Russell Sim m ons and
Busby. Bivins says, “ W e’re gonna de
liver. The public w on’t be disappointed
with what w e'll be coming w ith.”
So Biv lO hasonly just begun. And
as the record spins, Michael “ Biv” Bivins
w ill keep growing by following hisdream
of building careers. “ Years from now ,”
Busby says,“people will be talking about
this entertainm ent exec who groomed
him self at Motown. I’ll feel proud to be
a part of that."
