hassled by police officers, asserted,
“The greatest menace in the black com
munity is not the police. It’s all these
young black men who beat up old
ladies and kids.
“Whenever you elevate hoodlums
to heroes, you’ve got trouble. When

you look at that looting, by blacks and
whites, that wasn’t a protest. They
wanted TV sets.”
Marsalis, who’djusilellL.A . when
the riots occurred, said, “ I’ve been
hustled by the police. You grow up in
this society as a black, you get that.”
Marsalis, who recently split from
his longtim e com panion, Candace
Stanley, who has custody of their two
sons, Wynton Jr., 4, and S imeon, 2, said
he misses them terribly. “Man, I can’t
talk about it,” he commented. “1 have a
picture of me with one of my sons. I
can’t even look at it. I start to cry.”
