Three Long Hours
BY JOHN PHILLIPS
Getting to my press row seat at
Memorial Coliseum, high above Sec
tion 106 at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June
7, ended up being the longest three
hours I ’ve spent around any sporting
event in over 20 years. The event was
the Chicago Bulls’ 94-84 win (gift)
over the Portland Trail Blazers. This
was the worst played NBA Finals game
in 10 years. And to make matters worse,
the three officials resembled the Three
Stooges, and that’s bad - real bad.
Curly called traveling, Larry called a
charge, and More, was just being Moe!
Both teams needed to return to summer
camp and re-leam the way basketball is
played. The highlight of the day was
the conversation on press row. Jeff
Gamble of The Skanner on my right,
and Ullysses Tucker of the Mt. Tabor
News on my left, made it possible for
me to persevere for three long, arduous
hours. I think you get the idea. Enough
said about the game we all missed.
because both teams didn’t show up to
play. It made me think of an article I
read years ago in the New York Times,
which goes like this: “Once upon a
time, there were four people name
Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and
Anybody. When there was an impor
tant job to be done, Everybody was
sure that Somebody would do it. Any
body could have done it, but Nobody
did it. “When Nobody did it, Every
body got angry because it was
Everybody’s job. Everybody thought
that Somebody would do it, but No
body realized that Nobody would do it.
“So ¡tended up that Everybody blamed
Somebody when Nobody did what
Anybody could have done in the first
place.” Hopefully, Nobody will play
as bad as they played Sunday; Some
body will make the right decisions;
Everybody will be proud to say they
are NBA players; and the NBA won’t
let just Anybody officiate the next
game.
Chicago, which entered the NBA
in 1966 as an expansion franchise, is
making its second trip ever to the Fi
nals, the first coming last year when the
Bulls won the title. Portland, which
entered the NBA in 1970 as an expan
sion franchise, is making its third trip to
the Finals, having won the title in 1977
and lost to the Detroit Pistons in the
1900 NBA Finals.
The Bulls and Blazers have met
only once before in the NBA Playoff
history. That came in 1977, when Port
land, led by Bill Walton, beat Chicago,
led by Artis Gilmore, 2-1 in the First
Round cn route to their only NB A World
Championship. The Blazers won the
deciding game at home 106-98 in the
hard-fought series.
The Bulls head into the Finals with
an 11-5 record in the 1992 NBA Play
offs, 7-2 at home and 4-3 on the road.
Portland is 11-4 overall, 8-0 at home
and 3-4 on the road.
The Chicago Bulls and Portland
Trail Blazers have been the NB A ’sbest
teams of the ’90s. Over the past three
seasons, Chicago has compiled a 183-
63 record and a .744 percentage, with
Portland at 179-67 for .728.
Chicago and Portland win at home
or on the road. At home over the past
three years, Chicago ranks second in
the NBA at 107-16 for .870 and Port
land third at 104-19, .846. Utah is NO 1
at 109-14, .886. On the road Chicago
was 31-10 this past season and 76-47
for .618 over the last three years, both
tops in the league. Portland was just one
game back in second at 75-48 for .610
over that period, including 24-17 in
1992, tied for third in the league.
If the Bulls win, they would divide
$1,158,750 and the Blazers $808,750.
If the Blazers win, they would divide
$1,033,750 and the Bulls $933,750.
How important is the home-court
advantage in the NBA Finals? The team
with the (potential) extra game at home
has won 33 NBA Finals and lost 12, a
.733 percentage. And the Team with
the home-court advantage has won each
of the last six NBA Finals.
The importance of the home-court
advantage seems to be less when it
comes to the series-ending game of the
NBA Finals. The deciding game has
been won at home 25 times and on the
road 20 times.
Neither team did well inclose games
during the regular season. The Bulls
were 7-8 in games decided by three
points of less, although they were 2-1 in
overtime contests. The Blazers were 3-
5 in games decided by three or less and
2-4 in overtime.
The Bulls had the fewest shots
blocked of any team in the league, 352.
The Blazers tied Indiana for the most
players fouling out of any team in the
league, 25.
The Blazers ranked second in the
league to New York in rebounding effi
ciency at .528 while Chicago was fourth
at .522.
The Bulls, with Michael Jordan,
are bidding to become the sixth team in
NBA history to win an NBA title while
having the league scoring champion on
its roster. Before the Bulls and Jordan
did it last year, the only teams do to it
were the 1947 Philadelphia Warriors
with Joe Fulks, the 1949 and 1950
Minneapolis Lakers with George Mikan
and the 1971 Milwaukee Bucks with
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
From NBA NEWS
One key element that the Blazers hopefully will use to their advantage is
the match up between Kevin Duckworth and Bull's center Bill Cartwright.
Duckworth is shorter, but he's a lot stronger than Cartwright and can
score on him at will. Game 4 is tonight at 6.00 p.m.

HOUSING
?.
Working at a retirement home I
given me a new found respect for sen ior
citizens. Before, I use to joke about
people being old, but now 1 know that
everyone is going to gel old sooner or
later. I plan to pursue a Career in the
health care field. 1 am planning to at
tend Xavier University in New Orleans,
Louisiana. My major is Pre-Med. After
four years at Xavier, I will attend gradu
ate school to further my studies in Nurs-
ing Anesthesiology.
I stand out because I am an intelli
gent, beautiful, Black Young Lady and
I carry myself in a manner that reflects
that. I am very self-confident. Some
people think I’m too optimistic, but I
feel that if I don’t expect the best, then
I won’t get the best. I could care less
about being “Cool” when it comes to
things that arc against my morals and
values. I believe that God has a plan for
my life and that is what I want to follow.
I know that I could be successful at
anything I decide to do, but I also
believe that God’s way is the best way
and I don’t want to miss out on any of
his blessings in my life.

I have been blessed with many
talents, but I believe that my most vital
attribute is my desire to make an impact
on people and to “give back to my
community. This responsibility is ev

this responsibility to heart and fell that
it is my determination to fulfill this
actuality that so defines me. The differ

a change of ideals and rather a more
comprehensive development of them.

Before joining any types of clubs
such as the Benson Track Team, The
Les Femmes group and study groups,
my self-esteem wasn’t as high as it is
now. I use to wake up in the morning
not knowing what the day had in store
for me. As 1 grow, I become wiser and
have better judgement. In The Les
Femmes 1 have learned the etiquettes
of society, to be on time and to do your
best. I consider myself to be an intelli
gent, young African American woman
with a Burning desire to do something
in life.
