The A. Phillip Randolph institute,
the Columbia Pacific Building andCon-

partnership to connect job training par
ticipants with apprenticeship opportu-
nities. A reception will be held at the
N ortheast Em ploym ent and Training
Center on Friday, June 5, from 4:00 to
6:00 p.m. to formally kick o ff the
project. The N ortheast Em ploym ent
and Training Center is located at 3034
NE M artin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in
Pordand, Oregon. The three partners
will sponsor an apprenticeship liaison,
who will becom e a m em ber o f the staff
at the N ortheast E m ploym ent and
Training Center. This position has been
filled by Donna Hammond, a journey
man electrician. Hammond will work
with staff at the center to identify and
enroll individuals into apprenticeship
program s, utilizing available resources
to prepare the trainees for apprentice
ship participation and ensuring that the
Northeast Employment and Training
apprenticeship arrangem ents are sup
portive of the trainees. According to
Wally M ehrens, executive secretary o f
the Colum bia Pacific Building and
Construction Trades Council, “This
project will increase access to good
jobs for residents of North and N orth
east Pordand. It will also increase their
changes o f success in the trades, be
cause o f the additional support fos
tered by the apprenticeship liaison and
the A. Phillip Randolph Institute.” The
Northeast Employment and Training
Center provides com prehensive em
ploym ent and training services to low-
incom e people, especially African
American men and welfare recipients.
It is an operation of The Private Indus
