Dixon’s Doing The Right Thing

has worked for the Portland Public
Schools since 1978, and resides in
Northeast Portland with his wile
Vemette and their two children, a son
Dominick 3, and four- month-old daugh
ter Danielle.
Dixon is also founder of the Port
land Pro-Am Basketball League that
enters its sixth season this summer. But
the main thing on Dixon’s mind year
long is his PCC team. The Spring League
has seven teams that play three games
every Saturday and Sunday at two PCC
gym sites. Cascade and Sylvania. Both
the coaches and officials volunteer their
lime to help the league survive. The
coaches in the league are Vernon Baker,

Donald Dixon
The tide of Spike Lee’s movie “Do
the Right Thing” fits Donald Dixon to
a tee. Dixon at 35 years of age is a full
timecounselor at Jefferson high School,
and is also the men’s head basketball
coach at Portland Community College.
For most coaches, spring is a good time
to work on one’s golf or tennis game,
but not Coach Dixon. His spring week
ends are filled with over 80 young men
playing basketball in the Portland Com-
munity College Spring Basketball
League.
The league was the idea of Dixon
and his assistant coach, the ex-NBA
standout Richard Washington. With the
main goal being to find two or three
players that might make the PCC team
in the fall, it is and has been an excellent
alternative to gang affiliation and other
negatives that often find you men with
a lot of idle time on their hands.
This is the second year of the league
and Dixon has made it work with no
money from sponsorship. The money
for team uniforms came out of his
pocket. So all you local businesses, this
is a wav for you to give something back
by becoming a sponsor in next year’s
Spring League. Call Dixon at Portland

mont High School in Oakland, Califor-

Players that will help PCC become
a community college power next sea
son are Canaan Chapman, transfer from
Oregon State university; Andre Jones,a
6 ’7" strong man; and the Spring
League’s leading scorer, Delon Phoe
nix. Other players who are considering
PCC in the fall are Ramone Bethumc
and Zachary Longaker from Lincoln
High School; David Mays and Dontea
Frazer from Benson high School; and
transfers Eric Obec and Randy Bell.
The championship game was played
Sunday, may 31, between team #1,
coached by Richard Fortson, and team
#2, coached by Craig Moody. Team #2
captured the championship with a score
of 79-76.
We look for good things to happen
at PCC next season. All the hard work
that Coach Dixon and his stalf has put
into this league will pay off.

the 1992 NBA Finals will be seen and
heard live nationally in prime time.
NBC Sports’ weeknight coverage of
the NBA Finals will start at 9:00 p.m.
eastern time, with Sunday games com
mencing at 7 p.m. EDT.
Veteran sportscaster Marv Albert
will call the play-by-play, with former
NBA coach Mike Fritcllo and three-
time NBA MVP Earvin “ Magic” John
son serving as expert analysts. “ NBA
Showtime” hosts Bob Costas and Quinn
Buckner will anchor pre-game, half
time and post-game segments, includ
ing the “Insiders” Bob Terry and Peter
Vecsey. Surprisingly, a name not men
tioned is Portland’s own Steven Jones.

The international television broadcasts
of the 1992 NBA finals will be seen by
over400 million households, in 93 coun
tries on six continents.
The NBA Finals will be played in a 2-
3-2- home/road format for the eighth
year in a row and the 12th time in NBA
history. Ten of the previous 11 finals in
the 2-3-2 format have been won by the
team with the two sets of two home
games. The only exception came in
1985, when Boston opened at home but
lost to the Lakers in six games.
How important is the home court ad
vantage in the NBA finals? The team
with the (potential) extra at home has
won 33 NBA finals and lost only 12, a
733 percentage. And the team with the
home court advantage has won each of
the last six NBA Finals.
Only two teams have come back from
2-0 deficits to win NBA Finals — Bos
ton in 1969 and Portland in 1977. Both
lost the first two games on the road, then
went home and got back on track -

No team has ever come back from a 3-
0 or 3-1 deficit to win an NBA Finals.
Five teams have come back after being
down 3-2: Syracuse in 1955, Boston in
1962, Boston in 1969, Washington in
1978 and the L.A. Lakers in 1988.
What is the most important game to win
in the best-of-7 NBA Finals? Other than
the seventh (obviously), statistics show
it’s Game 3. Teams that have won
Game 3 have gone on to win 32 of 45
NBA Finals.
Of the four teams possible to reach the
NBA Finals, Chicago and Cleveland in
the east and Utah and Portland in the
west, which city has the highest hotel
rate? Would you believe Portland?
That’s right, Portland! The Portland
Marriott’s going rate per night is S 132,
Chicago’s O ’Hare Marriott is$95, with
both Cleveland Marriott East and Utah
Marriottcharging $79 pernight. It seems
like the Marriott Hotels have a lock on

Football Camp For Students
NFL Quarterbacks will hold a
football camp for 200 Portland School
District students Saturday, May 30, at
Roosevelt High School,6941 N. Cen
tral.
Former Phoenix Cardinals Quar
terback Neil Lomax and Cincinnati
Bengals signal-caller Eric Wilhelm
will conduct the clinic for 13-18 year-
olds from George and Portsmouth
Middle and Roosevelt High schools
from 1-4 p.m. at the Roosevelt foot
ball field.
Sports clinics in softball, soccer
and volleyball also will be conducted
by Portland State University coaches
for area 7th and 8th graders and mcm-
bers of Roosevelt athletic teams.
A girls softball clinic with PSU
coach Teri Mariani is scheduled May
