EBONY CHOICE
FOR BEAUTY & BARBERING
to human and civil rights in Oregon last
year. Form er winners have included
attorneys, leaders o f the American Civil
Liberties Union, individuals who have
opposed censorship — and last year,
Lavonne Lobert-Edm o o f the Salem
Education Association.
Now they have bestowed this award
upon one of their own again. He is one
of those people who lives what he advo
cates. By his own exam ple, he has
shown w hat can be done if we all work
together. He builds self esteem o f you
g people and points out to them their
many options. You will recognize him
as a leader in the black com m unity.
For years, he has been the driving
force behind a day-long celebration for
Martin Luther King Junior’s birthday.
An event, staged with a cast of hundreds
and televised on cable television, it
attracts a wide and appreciative audi
ence.
W ithin his own local, the award
recipient has been instrumental in build
ing a strong community and human
relations program and is admired by all
who are lucky enough to work with him .
The Ed Elliott Human Rights A ward
has been awarded to Ken Barry o f the
Portland A ssociation o f Teachers.
