John 3:16
Jesus: A Mighty Fortress
BY MATTIE ANN CALLIER-SPEARS
After you’ve traveled across life’s
highways and byways, as 1 have and for
as long as I have, you can’t help know
ing that it is Jesus who holds and con
trols the reins of your life’s existence.
W e’re bom and we find that we
have to depend on someone greater
than ourselves. T hen-w e get a little
older and we develop a mind of our
own. I can remember saying, when I
was a young adult, “ I’m on my own
now. I don’t have to listen to no one,
now, but m e.” How many of you re
member uttering those very same words?
Everything seemed to be going along
just fine and then...all that fun you
thought you were having goes sour.
You begin groping in the darkness.
First, because you are so grown, you go
to your friends and attempt to get help;
but, you find that they too have their
own problems. Then-you run to your
sister or brother and they look at you
like you have green ooze coming out of
your eyes. You’re saying to yourself,
“ Whatever you do, don’t go to Mom-
mie and Daddy because you know that
they are going to read you the riot act,”
whatever that is. But, you go to your
parents and they are more understand
ing than you thought they would be.
You can cry and be comforted. You can
sleep and be peaceful. Then you found,
much sooner than you want to admit,
your parents’ protectiveness is not the
ultimate protective covering.
“ And thou shall be secure, be
cause there is hope; yea, thou shall dig
about thee, and thou shall take thy rest
in safety. Also thou shalt lie down, and
none shall make thee afraid; yea, many
shall make suit unto thee. ’ ’ -Jo b 11:18-
19.
There are going to be times w hen
you can’t discuss everything with your
parents or your friends or your sisters
and brothers. Who do you call? You
call on the name of Jesus. Whatever
we’re feeling, whatever we’re suffer
ing, whatever we’re hoping—the Holy
Spirit, Jesus Christ, has something “ just
your size.” Something that is just right
to fit your problem.
The words of an old, old song
pleads, “ Hide me oh, my Savior hide.
Till the storms of life is past....” Only
Jesus can fix it for you. He knows just
what to do. But, you’ve got to let him
have his way. Praise God!
I’ve come to tell you today, “ Let
God abide. Deep within your soul, let
God abide!” God is a mighty fortress!
He will never fail you. He will help you
when the floods of life are prevailing
against you. And even though the darts
of Satan are seeking to destroy, you can
be assured that God’s power is mightier
and faithful and filled to the brim with
mercy.
Oh Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Everyday
the same. I can call on his name any
time and anywhere. I don’t have to
make an appointment. I have a direct
line plugged in. I am so happy, because
Bishop H. B. Daniels Passes
Bishop Harry Browning (H. B.) Daniels
BY D. BELL
, Bishop iferry Browning (H. -BJ
Daniels,; senro^pastor at the G rea^I
ML Cavalry, passed away last Tuesday
January 21, 1992 at the Providence
Medical Center in Portland, Oregon.
He was bom June 15, 1920 in
Portland, Oregon to the late Mr. Ran
som Arthur and Minnie Daniels.
He attended the Joseph Lane Ele
mentary School and graduated from
Benson High School.
In 1928, he married the late Jessie
Mae Pierre Daniels. She died in 1986.
During World War II he served in the
United States Army.
Upon returning from service in
the Armed Forces, he established Li
noleum City Recovering, which was
the first locally Black owned business
of its kind.
He received his formal Christian
educational training at the Multnomah
School of the Bible.
In 1949, Elder Daniels founded
the Mt. Cavalry Church of God in
Christ. The original congregation con-
sequentdy outgrew the first location
and in 1972 relocated to a new and it
present building located at 1234 NE
Killingsworth.
In 1976, Elder Daniels was conse
crated and flocked as Oregon Jurisdic
tion Number 1 Prelate, by the late pre
siding Bishop James Ogalthorpe Pat
terson, Sr. of the General Church of
God in Christ. Elder Daniels presided
over nineteen churches.
In 1986, Elder Daniels married
Dr. Ida M. Simpson-Daniels.
Elder Daniels was involved in
various endeavors in the community at
large as well; such as: radio and tele
vision ministries, Portland Opportu
nity Industrialization Center. Albina

Terry Shrunk task force and in the
recruiting of minority students for Reed
College, in Portland, Oregon.
one day, Jesus caught my falling soul.
Now I know that I am redeemed. I have
been washed by the blood of the Lamb.
That Lamb, that sacrifice, that little
baby in the manger is Jesus.
I can tell the world about this. I can
tell the nation that I am blessed. I can
tell them what Jesus has done and that
the Comforter has come. He brought
J-O-Y to my soul. All that I know is. ..I
am compelled to share the miraculous
and wondrous things that God has done
in my life and for me. I’ve got to tell it
wherever I go; either in song, by the
spoken Word or in deed.
One day-m an or woman or boy or
girl will discover that neither drugs nor
cigarettes nor alcohol nor sex nor sui
cide nor profanity will provide the
protection or give to them the relief
they are seeking. If you have troubles,
give them to Jesus. He can handle
anything that life can dish out. I gua-
RAN-tee! I remember some familiar
statements of Rev. John H. Jackson,
Pastor Emeritus of Mt. Olivet: “ If you
don’t have trouble today, just keep on
living.” And with a chuckle, he would
continue, “ And anyone who says that
he or she has no trouble, something is
desperately wrong with them; because,
my scripture says, ‘ Man bom of woman
is of a few days, and full of trouble.’ ”
(Job 1:1). Then he concluded by say
ing, “ You don’t have to go looking for
trouble-it will certainly find you!”
Even though this world, with its
devils, should threaten to undo us, we
should not fear, for God hath willed His
truth to triumph over us. The prince of
darkness, though he may weave a grim
web, should not cause us to tremble.
We can endure his rage because we
have read the end of the book (Revela
tion) and we know what his end will be.
We also know the one word that will
undo his little lures, “ Jesus!”
The power of the “ living” Word
is more powerful than a two-edged
sword. No matter what evil is lurking
