“ Retrospective,” an exhibit o f 37
photographs tracing the evolution of
the Dance Theatre o f Harlem, will be
on display at Shades o f Color Gallery
from January 2 through January 16.
Shades o f C olor is located at 316 NE
Thom pson St. west of MLK Jr. Blvd.
and is open daily from 12 to 6 p.m. The
exhibit is sponsored by the School of
Oregon Ballet Theatre. An opening
reception will be held at Shades of
Color on First Thursday, January 2nd,
from 6 to 9 p.m.
Dance Theatre of Harlem was
founded in 1969 by former New York
City Ballet Star A rthur M itchell fol
lowing the assassination of Martin Luther
King, Jr. Mr. M itchell’s goal was to
give H arlem ’s disadvantaged youth an
outlet for cultural achievement. From
humble beginnings the company has
grown into a world-renowned ensemble
know n for its blend of classical and
contemporary works. “ R etrospective”
captures that evolution through photos
o f some of the com pany’s most famous
productions of the past three decades.
The exhibit kicks o ff a series of
events organized by a local Audience
Developm ent Task Force working to
prom ote Dance Theatre o f H arlem ’s
upcoming visit to Portland. The cele
brated dance com pany — whose Port-
land engagem ent is being presented by
Oregon Ballet Theatre and Security
Pacific Bank — will perform at Port
land Civic Auditorium February 7, 8
and 9, 1992. A reception for the danc
ers, benefiting the Urban League of
Portland Guild, will follow the Friday,
February 7th performance. Ticket in
formation for performances and the
reception may be obtained by calling
the Oregon Ballet Theatre ticket office
at 227-6867.
The task force is a community-
based group of volunteers working to
increase the diversity of Dance Theatre
of H arlem ’s audience. School of O re
gon Ballet Theatre director Joe W yatt,
formerly a m ember of Dance Theatre
of Harlem, and M ichelle Harper of the
Portland Parks and Recreation Bureau
co-chair the task force. Other organiza
tions represented are the Linds, M etro
politan Arts Commission, Oregon Bal
let Theatre, the Urban Entertainm ent
Coalition and the Urban League of
Portland. The task force’s outreach
campaign during the next two months
will focus on schools, churches and
community groups in the Portland area.
For information on the Dance
Theatre of Harlem Task Force, call Joe
W yatt (227-6890) or Michael Pullen
(280-2615).
