Statistics show that o f the 12,607 adult/adolescent females with AIDS 52% are black and 20% are hispanic. In addition, over one fifth o f people in ­ fected w ith A ID S are in their twenties. Knowing the incubation period between H IV infection and the onset o f symp­ toms is seven to ten years, most o f these people contracted H IV as teenagers. There has been a 50% increase in the AIDS rate for 13-19 years olds between 1988-90. The campaign has a hotline (1- 800448-2007) where young people can call in and receive a “ safe sex” mes­ sage from Readhead.
