Page 4...The Portland Observer...Devember 4,1991 Portland O bserver ■— Scripture o f the Wkefi RELIGION Happy 30th Birthday Michael Jackson of Portland Watch ‘Dem Dogs by Mattia A nna C alllar-S pears A female African American pro fessor from Texas Southern, and who is also an AKA, shared some very im por tant information at the multicultural Education Conference which was re cently held in New O rleans, Louisiana. She said, “ As educators and school administrators, you should W A TC H ‘DEM DOGS. “ There are two types o f dogs who become very visible in the everyday experience and you should constantly be on the lookout for them. They are pointers and setters. “ The pointers - point at the faults of others, point at who is doing what wrong, point at inquisitions in your program, point at procedure and just point to be pointing. Then, there are the setters. They just set. They set on the progress, set on the program ’s m ove ment, they don’t allow progress to hap pen, they set on your recommendations and do nothing, they even set in the way o f others doing productive things. “ Yes! I say w atch ‘dem dogs! “ The morale to this story is - if you have developed a program and you’ve done the research and convinced the assessment o f needs, you can justify and satisfy your program; then, move ea gerly towar ds the implementation o f the program. But -- always but alw ays remember to W atch ‘Dem D ogs!” M ichael Jackson o f Portland, Oregon loves gospel music and plays the lead guitar. H e is an active m ember at Emmanuel Tem ple Church. He also plays and trav els with the Heaven Bound Gospel Choir. Çç In Loving Memory of Jamesetta (Jamie) D. Brock 1933-1991 Annual Christmas Vesper Service The Cathedral Choir of Bethel A.M.E. Church Group Takes Frankie Laine’s Lead Providing Shoes For The Poor And Homeless The Church o f Scientology’s L a dies Society com pleted a food and shoe drive this week, delivering 60 pairs of shoes and twenty turkeys to FISH Emergency Service, Inc. The dirve was inspired by the ‘ ‘ Frankie Laine S hoe Drive for the Poor and H om eless,” which was initiated by the famous singers in his home town of San Diego, California. Reverend Frank Shields, o f the emergency service’s Board o f D irec tors, heard o f Laine’s “ shoe drive” when he met Laine last fall. In hopes of inspiring similar action in Portland, Reverend Shields typed up the story and sent it around to several local area churches. Laine had been sparked by a new s cast he had seen in which a homeless person was noticeably losing the heel o f his shoe as he was being chased off o f a park bench by police. Struck by the plight of not even having a decent pair o f shoes to walk in, Laine thought of a simple way to involve the community in helping alleviate the problem. He incorporated one o f his songs “ Old Shoes’ ’ into a public service announce ment calling for people to donate their good quality, useable old shoes to the poor and homeless. The response was impressive. “ People often have a closet full of decent used shoes that they no longer w ear,” said Reverend Shields. “ This is simply a brilliant idea that we w ant to im plem ent here in Portland.” Psalm 100 Mallory Avenue Christian Church D i s c i p l e o f s C h r is t God's Presence promises Power through Jesus Christ In Good Times and Bod Times AdoOfieuj / /:&3 "Come to me all you who ore weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest" 9:45am 11:00am 7:30pm Sunday School Morning Worship Tuesday Bible Study and Prayer Inter-racial Congregation D e n ise ñ .
