Corporate A merica will gather December 11, 1991 at the New York Hilton and Tow ers to honor Dr. Ben­ jamin Hooks, executive director o f the national A ssociation for the A dvance­ ment o f Colored People (N AACP), for a lifetime of service to the civil rights movement. Corporate chairman for the event is Roger Enrico, chairm an and CEO of Frito-Lay, Inc., a division of PepsiCo., Inc. Dr. Hooks is beginning his 15th year as exec uti ve director for N AACP. Founded in 1909, NAACP is the larg­ est and oldest civil rights o rg a n iz a ­ tion in the w orld, with some 2,200 local branches and a nationw ide m em ­ bership o f more than 500,000 indi­ viduals. Under the leadership of Dr. Hooks, NAACP has had an active and broad role in minority affiars. NAACP pro­ gram s assist poor and minority people in the fields of education, em ploy­ ment, voter registration and inform a­ tion, youth program s and prison re­ forms. The organization also monitors and proposes legislation that affects civil and hum an rights. Dr. Hooks was appointed execu­ tive director in 1977. In 1979 he led the Prayer V igil in W ashington, D.C., which was successful in helping de­ feat an anti-busing am endm ent In 1980 he becam e the first civil rights leader to address both the Democratic and Republican national conventions in the same year. Prior to this he was presi­ dent and CEO o f PepsiCo W orldwide Beverages, which includes Pepsi-Cola and international soft drink operations. During his tenure, Pepsi-Cola sales reached $6.5 billion and profits hit more than $750 million. Mr. Enrico is the author of ‘ ‘The Other Guy Blinked,’ ’ the story o f how Pepsi won the cola wars.
