Assistant Professor or Associate Professor In Black Studies
The Black Studies Department at Portland State University is s -eking
to hire an Assistant or Associate Professor for the 1992-93 scho I year
on a tenure track appointment.
RESPONSIBILITIES: This individual will carry a regular loat in an
appropriate discipline area. They will also be expected to advise
students and serve on department and university committees as
appointed. Active community involvement is expected.
QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctorate in an appropriate field is pre­
ferred. Candidates in the final stage of completion of the doctoral
degree will be considered. A record of, or strong potential for, scholarly
activity is desired. Evidence of successful university level teaching in
Black Studies or closely related disciplines is important. Demonstrated
commitment to effective community involvement is also reouired.
Individuals with multidisciplinary backgrounds who are able to p ovide
instruction in more than one area of the Black experience are ociol-
ogy, economics, geography and/or political science. However other
disciplines will be considered. Specialization in the Caribbean Black
experience will be particularly helpful, but is not a requirement ft r hire.
Specialists in Africa and in the African-American experience are also
encouraged to apply.
APPOINTMENT: At the Assistant Professor or Associate Pro.essor
(dependent on professional achievements) level, nine month .enure
track position.
SALARY: Dependent upon qualifications and experience
EFFECTIVE DATE: Septem ber 16,1992
