Port of Portland Receives Award
The Port o f Portland is receiving
special recognition for being a leader in
energy efficiency fo r implementing
above-code efficiency measures when
it converted one o f its warehouses to an
office building.
PGE w ill presentan Energy Smart
Design Award and a $17,000 cash in
centive to the Port o f Portland for in
stalling several energy-efficient fea
tures in the renovation o f its Progress
Plaza building, located at 5160 N.
Lagoon Ave., on Swan Island. The
building was recently converted from a
warehouse to an office building. The
presentation w ill occur during the
m onthly Port o f Portland Commission
meeting, Wednesday, Aug. 14,8 a.m.,
700 N.E. Multnomah, Room 13 A , Port
land.
Through Energy Smart Design, PGE
energy-efficiency experts helped the
Port o f Portland make e fficien t design
decisions and select cost-effective and
“ energy-smart” equipment. The newly
remodeled 20,200-square-foot building
w ill now save some 21 percent in en
ergy consumption. This w ill result in
an annual savings o f more than 37,000
kilowatt-hours-about the same amount
o f electricity used to power three resi
dential homes indefinitely.
“ W e’ re pleased to play a role in
making operations at the Port o f Port
land more energy efficien t,’ ’ says Tom
Krueger, PGE Project Manager and
Engineer. “ By putting energy efficiency
on its agenda, the Port is saving money
and leading the way to a better envi-
romental future.”
The new Progress Plaza building
features many o f PGE’s Energy Smart
Design recommendations including
double glazing on a ll windows, a vari
ety o f efficient lighting applications,
and above-code insulation in the ce il
ing.
“ Im proving the Progress Plaza
building with new energy-saving meas
ures follow s a commitment at the Port
o f Portland to o ffe r properties and fa
cilities that are firs t rate, efficient, and
attractive,” says Carter M cNichol, Port
o f Portland’ s D irector o f Real Estate
M anagem ent and D eve lop m e nt.
“ R etrofitting the building helps save
the b uilding’s occupants money and
helps preserve the region’ s energy re
sources at the same tim e.”
“ We are pleased w ith and grateful
to PGE fo r offering the Energy Samrt
Design program,” he adds. “ The re
bate money, coupled w ith the long-
range cost savings, offers a nice incen
tive to continue implementing energy
smart modifications such as those in
the Port’s Progress Plaza b uilding .”
The renovation was completed in
June. Commercial O ffice Machine is
leasing 17,443 square-feet in the build
ing. The remaining space is available.
Two of the more than 100 minority college students currently employed as
summer interns by Pepsi-Cola Company talk shop with Maurice Cox, left,
Vice President, Corporate Development and Diversity, Pepsi Cola, at the
company headquarters in Somers, N Y., recently. With Cox are Jeff By as.
Center, a senior at Tuskegee University who is an intern in finance and
Sherrod Brown, a senior at Howard University and a retail sales intern.
Pepsi-Cola brought more than 60 current summer interns to New York for
a four-day conference that gave the students an “insider’s look" at how the
26,000 company employees function nationwide. Former summer interns
now employed by Pepsi-Cola urged the students to promote the program
on their campuses among other minority students. More than one
thousand ethnic students - African American, Asian American, Hispanic
American and Native American - have gone through the program since it
began in 1983 and more than 660 of that group found permanent
emDlovment with Pepsi following graduation.
