The Sound of Young America
Bank Of America’s Rock ‘n’ Rose
Concerts Return To
The Rose Garden Amphitheatre
Showcasing some of the finest
national talent, such as B.B. King,
Bradford Marsalis, and The Neville
Brothers, the Rock ‘n’ Rose Concerts
return to the Rose Garden Amphitheatre
in Washington Park over Labor Day
Weekend. Five summer evenings of
•op-notch music, towering trees and a
tremendous skyline view will be pre
sented August 29th through September
2nd as Bank of America returns the
Rock ‘n ’ Rose benefit concert series for
its second year. Proceeds from the 1991
Rock ‘n ’ Rose Concerts go towards
developing a funding base to return the
long-standing Portland Bureauof Parks
and Recreation’s free concerts in the
park, the Washington Park Festival.
The Washington Park Festival is a
separate scries of concerts that take
place one week before the Rock ‘n ’
Rose Concerts.
The existence of the Rock ‘n ’ Rose
Concerts make the free Washington
Park Festival a reality once again. Origi-
nab y started over 40 years ago, the
Washington Park Festival included
cultural events that might not other
wise be accessible to the public such as
plays, musical theatre, and the Woody
Hite Big Band. When the bureau lost its
funding, the program saw its demise. It
was the wish of city officials that it
return. So, with the help of corporate
sponsors like, Bank of America, The
Oregonian’s A & E guide, Henry Wcin-
hard’s, GTE Mobilnet, Burger King
and others, Showman Inc. and Monqui
Presents organized the first Rock ‘n’
Rose benefit at the amphitheatre in 1990.
Last year’s Rock ‘n ’ Rose Con
certs drew 15,000 people bringing in a
base huge enough to help fund this
year’s free Washington Park Festival.
This year’s concerts, which take place
August 21st - 25th, arc provided by
non-profit organizations such as the
Oregon Bluegrass Association, the Jazz
Society of Oregon, the Portland Sym
phony, and the Homowa Foundation of
African Arts and Culture. Presented by
Bank of America, the Washington Park
Festival will once again allow families
to enjoy the pristine nature of the Rose
Garden Amphitheatre in Washington
Park. Eventually promoters hope to
develop enough of a funding base through
the Rock ‘n ’ Rose Concerts to return
theater and additional events to the park.
Shanice Wilson is joined on the set of her upcoming video by Motown
President/CEO Jheryl Busby and video director Jeffrey Hornaday. The
18-year-old Shanice was in Hollywood filming her upcoming “I Love Your
Smile" video which is slated to debut in late August. The single, produced
by multiple Grammy-winner Narada Michael Walden, will be released
Sept. 3 and followed by her Inner Child LP in October. Shanice is primed
to further establish Motown's hot streak as she follows label-mates
Another Bad Creation, Boyz II Men and Stevie Wonder to the Top 10 of
1991 pop charts.
