Family Fun Fair
On June 15 & 16, St. Stephen’s
School will be the site of . “ r? ’
Fun Fair.” This is a fundraising event
designed to raise funds for the school.
The fair will be from 12 noon to 10
p.m. and offer refreshments including
a beer garden, arts & crafts, collect­
ibles & treasure booths. They will also
be raffling a trip to Disneyland for four
(2 adults & 2 children, airfare, hotel for
3 nights and 2 days, park admission &
tra n s fe rs ).

Competitions For
Artquake
Literary artists from throughout the
Northwest will have an opportunity to
read from their works at Artquake 91
through a series of new competitions
this summer.
Artquake’s Literary Arts Commit­
tee will host a series of three literary
arts performance competitions in June.
Twelve audience-selected winners, four
from each contest, then will move to a
final “ read-off” in July. The six win­
ners of the final round will be offered
an Artquake reader’s contract and
honorarium to perform at the Labor
Day weekend festival.
The competition has been designed
to create an opportunity for new and
little-known writers, as well as pub­
lished literary artists, to publicly per­
form and to find a larger audience for
their works.
The three preliminary rounds of
competition will take place at 7 p.m. on
successive Sundays in different areas
of the community: June 16 at the Inter­
state Firehouse Cultural Center, 5340
N. Interstate; June 23 at Satyricon, 125
N.W. Sixth, and June 30 at Echo The­
atre, 1515 S.E. 37th. Each performer
will have up to seven minutes of stage
time and must read his or her own
original composition.
Doug Marx will serve as master of
ceremonies for the contests and will
make the final evaluation of audience
•'sponse. A $2 fee will admit perform­
ers anu u.; public.

Artquake, Oregon’s largest festi­
val of the arts will celebrate its 15th
anniversary Aug. 31-Sept. 2 in down­
town Portland.

The Urban League of Portland is
holding its Annual Community Dinner
on July 11, 1991 at the Red Lion Inn,
Jantzen Beach. The event begins at
6:15 P.M. with a reception and dinner
immediately following at 7:15 P.M.
Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at
the Urban League office, 10 North
Russell or by calling 280-2600. Don’t
forget to make your reservations early
because last year’s event was a sellout.
The keynote speaker will be the
Honorable Lois DeBerry, Speaker Pro-
Temporc of the Tennessee House of
Representatives. Speaker DeBerry is
an alumnus of Lemoyne-Owen Col­
lege and has been a member of the
Tennessee General Assembly since her
graduation in 1972. Speaker DeBerry’s
tenure in office is characterized by her
devotion to children and youth issues,
education, criminal justice reform and
economic development.
Master of Ceremonies for the eve­
ning will be Ed Whelan, sportscaster
for KOIN-TV, Channel 6. Honorary
Co-Chairs for the event are Marsha
Congdon, Vice president, U.S. West
Communications and State Senator Jim
Hill.
Two local African American high
school students, one male and one
female, will be awarded the Vernon V.
Chatman and the E. Shelton ’‘Shelly”
Hill Scholarship Awards. These $ 1,500
scholarships arc granted through the
Urban League and NIKE, Inc. and will
be given annually to two deserving
young persons. Chatman and Hill will
present the scholarships to this year’s
winners.
The evening promises entertain­
ment, fun and a number of opportuni­
ties to network. The themeof this year’s
dinner is “ Voices that Care - Working
for Unity.” Include your voice with
those who care and join us for the
Urban League Annual Dinner.
