Anxiety and
Depression
Associated with
Chronic Stomach
Aches in Children
Although recurrent abdominal pain
affects approximately 12 percent of
school-aged children, only 10 percent of
those affected have an identifiable medi
cal problem. The other children are often
assumed to be suffering from emotional
problems such as anxiety and depres
sion. To determine whether these chil
dren have more emotional problems than
other youngster, NICHD-supported in
vestigators at Vanderbilt University in
Nashville, Tennessee compared them to
children with physical diagnoses for their
stomach pain, children with psychiatric
disturbances, and healthy controls. An
increased incidence of emotional prob-
lems-primarily anxiety and depression-
was found in both the children with a
medical diagnosis for their abdominal
pain an those without. Further testing is
needed to determine the relation between
the emotional and physiological symp
toms found in children with recurrent
abdominal pain.
