was founded in 1908 at H ow ard U n ive r­
sity, in W ashington D .C . It is the w o rld ’ s
firs t college-based so ro rity founded by
B la ck wom en and has become a sym bol
o f the aspirations o f young wom en to
develop their fu ll potentials in an atmos­
phere o f fe llo w s h ip and m utual stim u la ­
tio n to excellence.

six hundred chapters located throughout
the U n ite d States, W est A fric a , the West
Indies and Europe. The Portland Chapter
was chartered in 1955 and has been an
active part o f the co m m u n ity since that
tim e. T hey award scholarships annually
to outstanding undergraduate students
pursuing a career. The S o ro rity also
provides a “ F iner W om anhood” award
to a fem ale high school student w ho
excels in leadership and other co m m u ­
n ity a ctivities. A lp h a Kappa A lp h a has
also donated substantial funds to various
causes in clu d in g the U nited Negro C o l­
lege Fund, the N AAC P, the Urban League,
Job Corps, and the N ational C o u n cil o f
Negro W omen.
