NEW FLOATING
HYUNDAI AUTO DOCK
= SERVES FIRST SHIP
Hyundai Motor America’s (Hyun
dai) new floating auto dock served its
first Hyundai auto ship, HYUNDAI NO.
109 from Ulsan, Korea, Thursday (June
28) as 2,320 Hyundai excels and Sonatas
were unloaded by Portland longshore
workers.
The floating auto dock at Berth 601
was the final piece of the Hyundai auto
U ■ mnal complex. The dock is unique. It
wa constructed by the Port by modify
ing two former navy dry docks and form
ing them into a 104’ x 440’ floating auto
dock. The Port was able to obtain the dry
docks through the cooperation of the
Oregon State general Services Depart
ment.
The HYUNDAI NO. 109 is oper
ated by Hyundai Merchant marine
Company, Ltd. (HMM), with local rep
resentation by Sunrise Shipping Agency,
Inc. Two automobile ships a month will
call on Hyundai’s new Terminal 6 auto
processing facility.
Hyundai celebrated completion of its
new $12.2 million auto terminal and
vehicle auto processing facility last match.
Hyundai has a long-term, 15-year lease
with the Port—one of three major auto
importers with long-term leases.
Since 1986, when Hyundai first began
importing cars through Portland, more
than 245,0(X) Excel subcompacts and
Sonata midsize automobiles have passed
through the Port of Portland on their way
to any one of 29 stales of the 49 states in
which Hyundai now has dealers.
