June 6,1990 The Portland Observer Page 5 JL .I l N ews A round T own P ortland O bserver I I Teen Sex Abuse Conference Held liiiiîîî l Iliiiï ïü J This Week In History On this anniversary o f D-day (June 6,1944) and due to the untim ely death o f Ronald Gene Washington, Jr., this column w ill focus on wars and hate-crimes, and the senselessness o f such. M any claim that people are violent by their very nature, and there fore, they claim , wars are inevitable. I don’ t believe this to be true. W ar is an archaic, juvenile way o f dealing w ith a co nflict (or conflicts) that should be dealt with on an intellectual basis. What happens, th o u g h ts that people become impatient and frustrated; when they can’ t make people accept their opinion via intellectual means, they try to “ force” it using their fists. A n y solution that a fig h t on any scale (fis t fig ht, murder, war, w hat ever) achieves is only a temporary solu tion, a Band-aid on a m ajor wound. The lose r-th e repressed p a rty -is not satis fied, and they suppress anger and ir resolution u ntil an opportunity fo r re vo lt arises. Discord seems to turn to a power struggle. Everyone wants his/her opin ion “ enforced” ; often they w ill result to extrememly violent means to do so. W ar is a power trip, an euphoric “ rush ” sand^rsllque fo r involved parties. It boosts the self esteem o f the warring persons or coun tries. The problem with conflicts and ensuing power struggles is that it doesn’t ju st affect those involved. It does not affect anyone in a positive way, either: though the “ w inner” feels boosted, it costs them, whether it be cuts and scratches, blood, or death on a mass scale. H ow can anyone call a war that causes hundreds o f thousands or even m illio n s o f deaths o f innocent victim s a “ success” ? Part o f the problem is that people whom are unrelated to the con flic t become involved. Picture how it is at a concert or some other massed people environment. T w o people start a fight, and the group m entality envelopes ev- eryone-everyone is so attuned to crowd environ and emotion, they do not fu lly facilitate their own capacity fo r th in k ing; they get “ lost in the m ind o f the crow d ” -s o o n everyone is swinging punches fo r reasons they can’ t recall later, probably because the reasons were so triv ia l, and they were so caught up in the atmosphere ( “ well, some guy shoved me, and next thing I know w e’re all fig h tin g ” ). S im ila rly, in wars, two warring countries suck the rest o f the w orld into the m entality: one by one, countries enter the war u ntil the whole w orld is fighting. A d ditio na lly, in correlation w ith the Soviet-American Arm s talks, I have a question fo r our men o f power. Some years ago, I read that we had enough bombs, submarines, and m is siles to blow up the entire w orld twelve times over. As that was before the Reagan era, one can reasonably pre sume that since that tim e, that figure has at least doubled. Regardless o f the question as io whether we should com- p le U ly d'sarm, shouldn’t we at least stop building the bombs, and start feed ing our people? One need only bomb the w orld o n ce -n o t 12 or 24 tim e s - if at a ll. And I read a w hile back that we spent tw o b illio n dollars on a missile that, in a test run, N EV ER E V E N L IF T E D OFF TH E G R O U N D . Tw o b illio n dollars is a lot o f food fo r a lo t o f people. What I ’ m saying is, “ duke it o ut’ ’ intellectually rather than w ith fists and knives. L e t’s call an end to sense less hatred and violence. Black broth ers and sisters, jo in hands...as Lenny K ra vitz tells us, let love rule. ro c THANKS. Ancer L.
