A gain in this w eek’s text, the Lord
Jesus turns o u r attention to the Person o f the
Holy Spirit. For the original band of d is­
ciples, poised on the edge o f an aw esom e
and unknow n future, the prom ised " C o m ­
forter’ ’ or ‘ ‘C ounselor’ ’ w ould have been a
w elcome friend. A nd the Lord w anted them
to know how the Spirit w ould serve them
after the L o rd ’s death and A scension. So we
ought to look carefully at the w ork of the
Holy Spirit in the lives o f believers, and
respond properly to his presence w ithin us.
For one thing, the Lord says that “ when
he, the Spirit o f truth, com es, he will guide
you into all tru th ” (16:13a, N IV ). He actu­
ally is referring to som ething h e ’d told the
disciples earlier: “ the C ounselor, the Holy
S p ir it. . . w ill teach you all things and will
rem ind you o f everything I hav e said to
y o u " (14:26). In this first instance, he as­
sured them that the Spirit w ould give them
true and accurate recall o f the w ords and
deeds of the Lord. W e have the record o f the
S pirit’s work in the four G ospels, w hich are
com plete records o f C h rist’s w ork, though
not by any m eans exhaustive (see 21:25).
B ut in the second instance (16:13 A), the
Lord says the Spirit w ill guide us into all
truth. T h at’s like saying that the Spirit will

as our M odel, encouraging us to lift up Jesus
C hrist in every avenue o f life. T he m ore we
know about Jesus and m editate on his p re­
cepts, the less im portant our possessions,
our status and our own pow er becom e. W ith
the help of the Holy Spirit, we can truly
fulfill the spirit o f the gospel chorus:
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
look full in his w onderful face,
and the things o f earth w ill
grow strangely dim,
in the light o f his glory and grace.
take you by the hand and lead you down the
right road, the one that leads to truth, w ith­
out any hint o f m istake or error. D on’t you
often feel the need to know the right d eci­
sion to m ake, about fam ily, relationships,
jo b or career? E ven when we know what the
Bible says about a particular question, we
still aren’t sure how to apply it to our ow n
dilem m as. T h at’s w here the Spirit can guide
us, as we m editate on the Scripture and pray
for practical w isdom (see Jam es 1:7).
T he Spirit particularly is concerned to
exalt and glorify the L ord Jesus him self
(John 16:13-14). The Holy Spirit never pushes
him self forw ard, receiving praise o r wor-
