When evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and bind. When evil men shout ugly words or hatred, good men must commit themselves to the glories of love. Where evil men would seek to perpetuate an unjust status quo, good men must seek to bring into being a real order of justice." She was anchored to that seat by the accumulated indignities of days gone by and the boundless aspirations o f generations yet unknown.’ ’ —Martin Luther King Assistant Postmaster General Elwood A. Mosley unveiled December 19,1989 the design of a commemorative stamp honor ing civil rights activist Ida B. W ells during the NAACP Image Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles. The Ida B. Wells commemorative stamp, the 13th in the black Heritage Series, w ill be issued February 1 in Chicago in conjunc tion with Black History Month. Additional information concerning the ceremony w ill be announced in the near future. The stamp design, by Thomas B lack shear of Novato, California, features a stun ning portrait o f W ells based on several photographs of her taken during the mid- 1890s. A line of pickets forms a dramatic backdrop, symbolizing her fierce denun ciation o f racial discrimination and her anti-lynching crusade. Blackshear also designed philatelic tributes to Jean Baptiste Pointe Du Sable, James Weldon Johnson and A. Philip Randolph, the three moat recent honorees in the series. Bom a slave in 1862, W ells devoted fier entire life to educating people about the 5215 N. Lombard St. Portland, OR 97203 (503)285-9871 horrors of discrimination and lynching. She was the secretary o f the National Afro- American Council and the first president o f the Negro Fellowship League in C hicago. In 1909, she helped found the National Association for the Advancement o f Colored People.
