Reverend Sharpton Becomes Columnist
For National Alliance Newspaper
I .S. Representative Cardiss Collins (D-Ill) (left), chairwoman of the Subcommittee
On Government Activities and Transportation; Deborah Dillon, president,
Dillon Telecommunications, Inc.; and William Lindsay, manager, Purchasing
Materials Management, US Sprint take part in an historic videoconference
which brought together more than 300 minority and female suppliers in 15
cities with US Sprint and United Telecom’s purchasing decision makers.
A TALK OF ADVERTISING-Charles Reid, (center), director of urban
affairs and equal employment opportunity, Kraft General Foods, joins a
discussion between Bernie Foster, publisher, the ‘Skanner,’ of Portland, OR,
and Gina Gallovich, manager, communications for Kraft General Foods. The
trio attended the National Newspaper Publishers Association’s (NNPA) Mid-
W'inter Workshop in Riverside, CA., where the company announced a $1
million corporate advertising budget for the black print media. A Kraft
General Foods statement issued at the workshop said of the Black press: “ Each
publication is adept in delivering a critical service to its readership by
recognizing the specific needs of the community it serves.”
Reverend A1 Sharpton, the Brooklyn-
based civil rights leader, has begun writing
a w eekly c o lu m n -" T h e P e o p le ’s
Preacher” -for the National Alliance news
paper. In his first column, which appears in
the issue o f the Alliance dated Feb. 1,
Reverend Sharpton charges that Mayor
Marion Barry of Washington .D.C.-who
was recently arrested for using drugs-was
the target of a government " s tin g " opera
tion. Reverend Sharpton argues that the
entrapment of Mayor Barry is part of a
larger effort to "destroy” progressive Black
leaders.
"M arion Barry comes out of the civil
rights movement and he has maverick ten
dencies regarding the poor, the Black, the
gay and other oppressed and disenfran
chised groups in the United States,” writes
the leader of the United African Movement
in his first column. “ It is for that reason and
the fact that he is not one of the more
dependable Black mayors to the hierarchy
of the Democratic Party that made him a
target in the first place. Had Marion Barry
graduated from the school of mediocrity
with Douglas Wilder and David Dinkins,
with the same allegiance to keeping his
eyes covered and his ears closed on any
thing distasteful to white ruling class America,
I am sure they would not have gone to this
effort and to this degree to sting him .”
In his introduction to “ the People’s
Preacher” senior editor Michael Klein
welcomes Reverend Sharpton to the pages
of the Alliance, identifying the controver
sial African American leader as a member
of the “ new opposition” in New YorkCity.
Along with civil rights attorney Alton
Maddox, Jr., New Alliance Party chair Dr.
Lenora Fulani and Dr. Fred N ew m an-w ho
recently appeared with him at a New Alli
ance Party-sponsored forum on “ blacks
and Jews in New York City” -R everend
Sharpton, said Mr. Klein, “ offers some
thing more than hollow talk about unity.”
That is why, he said, these leaders “ have
become so beloved by their supporters and
so despised by the powers that be.”
The mere name of the Harlem Globe
trotters is synonymous with ball handling,
razzle-dazzle, court comedy, laughter and
the whistling refrain of "S w eet Georgia
Brown.” No team has played more games
in more places before more people than the
Globetrotters. They have dribbled and dunked
their way through more than 103 countries
while playing well over 16,000 games.
They bring their entertaining brand of bas
ketball to Portland Memorial Coliseum,
Sunday, February 11, at 5 p.m.
The National Alliance is published by
the Castillo Cultural Center, an independ
ent cultural collective made up of artist.s
photographers, actors, writers, craftspeople,
journalists and researchers who are all
political activists.

Rev. Sharpton, Dr. Fulani, Attorney Alton
Maddox Join Yonkers Minister At Head
of Anti-Segregation March
Nearly 1,000 people marched last Sat
urday in the largest civil rights protest ever
held in the city of Yonkers. The Rev. Darryl
George, pastor of Yonkers' Messiah Bap
tist Church, led the protest. He was joined
by the Rev. A1 Sharpton, president of the
United African Movement. Dr. Lenora Fulani,
chairperson o f the independent New Alli
ance Party, civil rights attorney Alton
Maddox, Yonkers activist Stonewall Odom,
and Moses Stewart, the father of Yusuf
Hawkins, the young Black man who was
brutally murdered in the Bensonhurst sec
tion of Brooklyn last August.
Saturday’s protest was held to mobi
lize a grassroots challenge to the long en
trenched pattern of racial segregation in
Yonkers. The civil rights demonstrators are
demanding that the mayor and city council
act in good faith to carry out a housing
desegregation order issued five years ago
by the U.S. Department of Justice.

In 1985 a federal court ruled that hous
ing and schools in Yonkers are intention
ally racially segregated and ordered the city
to build 200 units of public housing and to
plan additional subsidized housing. In 1988
four members of the Yonkers city council
refused to vote in accordance with the fed
eral order and were subsequently fined for
contempt of court. This month the U.S.
Supreme Court overturned the fines.
“ History is being carved out in
Yonkers,” Rev. George told protestors at a
rally held after the march in a park on the
city’s east side. “ All week the community
leaders condemned us, telling us to stay
home, yet we marched today because the
masses are ready for a change in Yonkers.
No longer can we allow a plantation men
tality to exist.”
Expressing his appreciation for the
support of Rev. Sharpton, Dr. Fulani and
Mr. Maddox, Rev. George noted. “ Certain
Negro leadership called me and said, “ Why
d id n 't you call on us? If I’m drowning, why
do I have to call you to come and help me?
W e’ve been drowning in Yonkers for too
long. We needed somebody to throw a life
line out to us.”
“ We will not be here just today," Rev.
Sharpton pledged in his address to the rally.
“ W e'll be back over and over again and at
the next city council meeting. They have
insulted our nation as a people by what they
have done in the Yonkers decision. We
have shown our self determination and
w e’ve shown that we will stand u p .”
“ It is outrageous that in the 1990s
Black folks are marching because they can’t
live in a particular area 20 years or more
after Dr. King’s death,” said Dr. Fulani,
charging that New York’s Governor Mario
Cuomo “just doesn’t believe that the gov
ernment has the obligation to provide people
with decent housing. They do, and until we
get it we have the right to fight both against
the discrimination and also against home
lessness.”
