Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., demonstrated his com m itm ent to
struggle for civil rights by consistently involving himself in non­
violent activity in his effort change without abandoning his
humanity; and
The leadership of Dr. King did have tremendous im p a ct on
the hearts, minds, and consciences of the people of this
nation; and
WHEREAS:
With the help of his leadership, this nation was enhanced to
the benefit of all American citizens; and
WHEREAS:
The State of Oregon has a responsibility and a com m itm ent
to insure equality andthefull participation of all its citizens so
th a t they achieve the full benefits of citizenship; and
WHEREAS:
The State of Oregon recognizes the im portance of the lead­
ership provided by the great American, Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.; and

are proud to join other states in setting aside a legal state
holiday for grades K-12; and

work to keep alive and to make real Dr. King's dream of

I, Neil Goldschmidt, Governor of the State of Oregon, hereby
proclaim January 15,1990, as
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., DAY
in Oregon and encourage all citizens to join joyfully in this
observance.

eastern region’s secretary for the fraternity.
He serves on the executive council o f the
United Church o f C hrist which is the high­
est deliberation board for 1.7 m illion de­
nom ination.
Dr. M iller is listed in the 1982 edition
o f O utstanding Young Men o f A m erica and
the 1989 edition o f W ho's W ho Among
B lack Americans.

o f Dr. Law rence E. M iller as national ex­
ecutive director during their national board
retreat on N ov. 9-12, 1989 at the M iam i
Lakes Inn, M iami, Florida.
In his new position. Dr. M iller serve as
the chief officer o f operations for the frater-
n ity ’s national headquarters, staff and its
m ore that 90,000 m em bership. Dr. M iller
w ill becom e the third national executive
director o f the fraternity since its founding
in 1914 at H ow ard U niversity in W ashing­
ton, D.C.
“ L aw rence'sextraordinary record as a
skilled m anager speaks for itself," said
President W omack following the announce­
m ent o f M iller’s hiring. “ His know ledge o f
the fraternity and his sensitivity to the
challenges we face in the 1990s make him
that rare individual w ho com bines the best
elem ents o f creativity and executive acu­
m en ,” W om ack added.
Dr. M iller will assume his new po si­
tion in January o f 1990. Prior to that, he
served as housing assistant with the D epart­
m ent o f C om m unity Planning, Housing
and D evelopm ent in A rlington, Virginia.
" I accept this position with great an ­
ticipation. I am excited at the opportunity to
work w ith seven regional directors and the
m em bership o f our organization," said
M iller. " I believe that we will conquer the
challenges that face the A frican-A m erican
m ales w hich will then strengthen our com ­
m u n ities."
B om in Colum bia, South Carolina and
reared in Raleigh, North Carolina, Dr. Miller
is a m em ber o f A lpha Sigm a C hapter o f the
Fraternity. H e also is currently serving as
