Susan Engeleiter, the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (S BA), today announced that federal prime contract awards to women-owned small businesses have increased by 1,000 percent from 1979 to 1988. In fiscal year 1988 federal prime contracts awarded to women-owned firms reached a record $1.9 billion. The Department of Defense accounted for $1.2 billion or 64 percent of the total. The second highest contract dollar amount of $242 million was achieved by the Department of Energy. The Office of Women’s Business Ownership within the Small business Administration negotiates annual prime contracting goals with all major federal agencies. In commenting on the new record Engleeiter said, “ We are proud of the role our Agency plays in encouraging annual increases in federal procurement activity for women-owned firms. This process is critical to the steady growth in federal contract dollars going to women- owned firms. This year’s achievement exceeded the goal bv $341.2 million.” According to Lindsey Johnson, Director of the Office of Women’s Business Ownership, “ We believe the federal marketplace holds great potential for women business owners seeking growth and diversity. One of the priorities of our office is helping women business owners gain access to that market.” ’ In addition to urging federal agencies to increase the amount of business they do with women-owned firms, the small Business Administration offers publications and training that explain the federal procurement process.
