The Ballet performs original cho reography inspired by traditional dances idigenous to Senegal, Gam bia, Mali, and Guinea, West Africa. The performance not only allows the audience to experience an African lifestyle, but also traditional drum ming and dancing with its ceremo nial grandeur. Bruce Smith, founder of the Bal let, attended Lewis & Clark College and is on the faculty of the Jefferson Performing Arts Department at Jef ferson High School in Portland. Smith has studied drumming for 17 years. Ten of those years were on concert circuit with the nationally known recording band “ Pleasure.” For the past eight years, Smith has focused his studies on African hand drumming with master drummers Obo Addy and Jalal Sherriff and on tradi tional African dance with Chuck Davis and Nafisa Sherriff. During the summers of 1981 and 1986, Smith traveled to five coun tries in west Africa to research tradi tional drum and dance techniques and to study with master drummers and dancers in several regional vil lages. The 1981 experience inspired him to create the Northwest Afrikan American Ballet. The 16 member of young and inspired dancers and musicians has captivated standing-room audiences with its precision drumming, high- energy dance movements and vibrant colored traditional costumes. The Northwest Afrikan American Ballet has presented workshops, concerts and lectures throughout Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Cost is $6 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
