I first discovered Erica this sum mer while I was refereeing in the Self-Enhancements first summer league basketball program for both middle school (11, 12, & 13 year olds)andhighschool(14,15,16& 17 year olds) boys. Erica was highly recommended to participate in the league as the only female and to my surprise she was one of the top play ers in a league fu llo f players with a lot of talent. Not only is Erica a very good basketball player but she is also very feminine as she plays with the boys. All of the boys in the league gave her total respect because they all recognize her fantastic abilities to play with them. By seasons end she was just one of the guys. I asked Erica how long has she been playing and where did she learn to play? Her response was, ‘‘1 have been playing since I was six. My father taught me everything 1 know. He has been my biggest inspiration” . I then asked her why does she play with the guys and if she worries about the game getting too physical: She said, “ I started playing against the guys five years ago and they have made me better. 1 don’t worry about them getting too physical with me, I’m usually just as big as they are” . Erica was involved in the Pepsi Hotshot contest and placed first in the 9 to 11 year old girls division. She went on to represent Oregon at the National competition in Cleveland, Ohio where she placed 5th. I was honored to have the oppor tunity to watch Erica play this sum mer and 1 know we can expect big things out of her in the future. Erica now attends Ockley Green as a 7th grader and she doesn’t know what high school she wants to go to yet. She plans to play ball for Ockley Green during the school year and then she will again play next summer in the Self-Enhancements Summer Basketball League. I strongly urge you to come and watch how this Entertainment: Nu Shooz & Crazy 8's Tuesday, August 29, 5pm & 8 pm Presenting on the M ille r Genuine D raft Stage at the L.
