The occasion was the recording o f background vocals for “ Knocking O n H eavens’s Door, one o f the selections featured on the “ Lethal W eapon 2 ” album soundtrack. The selection, featuring jazz songstress Randy C raw ford on lead vocals, was produced by M ichael Powell. Powell, who produced A nita B aker’s current smash LP, is also a bom -again Christian. Did C h ristia n ity spoil success for D onna S u m m er? W ell, that seem s to be w hat the record com m unity would have many to believe, now that the former disco queen, now 40, is back on the pop charts for the first tim e in over five years. In fact, record industry hype is that Sum m ers’s difficulties began after she publicly pronounced that she was a born-again Christian. But Sum m er know s better. In fact in a recent interview, Sum m er said “ my life used to be chaotic and it was only by the grace of G od that she didn’t OD on some sort o f m edication or do som ething crazy like taking too many pills. W hen I reaffirm ed my faith in G od, I had an instant deliverance.” No C om p etitio n F o r C om m issioned: Success is changing the face of gospel m usic, as more and more artists are attracted to the m edium via the successes o f groups like the W inans and Take Six. Gospel music is grow ing up and industry insiders say com petition in the field is getting stiffer. However, m em bers o f the group Com m issioned, whose current L P “ W ill You Be R eady?’ ’ is holding at num ber eight on the gospel music charts, say the d o n ’t view other gospel acts as com pletion. “ W e’re all lifting up the name o f the Lord and trying to win souls. I think we all should pray for one another and when som ebody else is up, we need to lift them up in prayer that someone may be healed o r delivered through music m inistry. QU ESTIO N : I ow n a small business and have several em ployees to help me operate it. They, as well as I would like to know how much Social Security tax will be taken out o f our earnings this year. ANSW ER: This year self-em ployed people, such as yourself, are paying Social Security taxes at a rate o f 13.02 percent o f their earnings up to the m axim um o f $48,000. The tax rate for your em ployees is 7.51 percent of their earnings up to that yearly m aximum. QU ESTIO N : My husband and 1 are retired and have been enrolled in an H M O for the last 4 years. All o f our health needs are taken care of and it has been very convenient. W e are now going to leave the area and relocate w here our son and his family are living. Since our HMO is a local organization, we will lose its coverage when we move. Can someone at Social Security assist us in finding similar HM O coverage in the new location? ANSW ER: Yes, certainly. Just call 1-800-234-5772 or visit your nearest Social Security office in the new location. Som eone there will have inform ation about the insurance plans and health service organizations in your new area. Q U ESTIO N : I had a serious back injury 4 years ago and got disability benefits for over a year and a half until I could return to work. My back condition has worsened over the past few months and I do n ’t know how m uch longer I will be able to work.I rem em ber waiting several months before I received my first check. If I apply for benefits again, will it take as long as it did the first time? ANSW ER: M aybe not. It depends upon w hat the new medical reports say and w hether additional evidence is required. A w orker who becomes disabled a second tim e within 5 years after benefits stopped can have his or her checks start again, beginning with the first full month o f disability, if the new claim is approved. There is no new 5-m onth waiting period required, as was the case in your first claim . Also you may be interested to know that since you probably did not have M edicare during your first period of disability, those months o f prior disability will count toward the 24 benefit m onths required for M edicare en titlem ent Q U ESTIO N : I recently received my “ Personal Earnings and Benefit Estim ate Statem ent” from social Security and I like it! I did not realize there was Social Security survivor and disability coverage. However, 1 have a question that was not answ ered on my statem ent. W hat am ount will my spouse receive on my retirem ent account? ANSW ER: An eligible spouse of a retired w orker under the Social Security program is entitled to up to 50 percent o f the w orker’s unreduced Social Security benefit. The exact am ount depends on w hether the spouse starts benefits before reaching age 65. A spouse’s benefit is also affected by her own Social Security coverage. It is possible for a w ife to get a higher benefit on her ow n account. If your wife has worked, she should get her own “ Personal Earnings and Benefit Estim ate Statem ent.” L. ! Q U E ST IO N S am getting close to retirem ent and ju st received a letter from the Federal A ssistance Corporation, with an offer to help me file for Social Security benefits if I send them $18.00. W ill using this service help m e get benefits more quickly? ANSW ER: The Federal A ssistance Corporation is not affiliated with the Social Security A dm inistration in any way. They cannot provide you any i i i > help that will not be provided free by Social Security. Using that service may li actually delay the processing o f your Social Security application. Social I a i a Security recom m ends people not to use this type o f service. ■ a Q U E ST IO N S receive Supplem ental Security Income (SSI) paym ents a a because o f a crippling condition that began in my youth. 1 am not able to a a a a a a work in a regular job, but thought I could handle a home-based jo b selling cosm etics. 1 know that my earnings will have an effect on my monthly p a y m en t A N SW ER:In order to rem ain eligible for SSI, your income must be w ithin certain lim its. In 1989, your m onthly countable incom e m ust be under $368.G enerally, if you have unearned income, the first $65 o f earned incom e is not considered when calculating your countable income, a.id half the am ount over $65 does not count either. If you have no unearned income, the first $85 o f earned income plus one-half o f the rem ainder does not count. The am ount that rem ains after all exclusions are applied results in a $1 for $ 1 reduction in your SSI paym ent amount. Be sure to notify Social Security if you begin working.
