Due to the change of climate, Peggy
was not in her rare fo rm -but everyone
in attendance thoroughly enjoyed her
performance. With the cold or without

audience as the choir, was magnificently
done.
We were all blessed by her tremendous
talent. Its a gift from God.

Lewis’ prominence over the last 30
years puts him in a unique position to
discuss the relations between America’s
Jewish and black communities, closely
allied at the beginning of the movement
and suffering well-reported strains in
the years since.
“ We have lost some of our finest
leaders, but we are still very involved in
that struggle for liberation,’ ’ said :lewis
;last year, receiving an honorary doctorate
from Williams College. “ Our struggle
is not for one day, or one week, or one
year, but for a lifetime if that’s what it
takes.”

Funeral services were held on
Monday, April 10, 1989 at the Ml.
Olivet Baptist Church for Mrs. Pearl
Clark Clow. She was 93 years old. She
passed on Wednesday, April 5,1989 in
a Portland hospital.
She was bom in Virginia in December
26.1895.
Mrs. Clow has always been active in
the church and the community.
She came to Portland 50 years ago. She
attended Virginia Union University and,
after moving to Portland, she continued
her education and graduated from
University of Oregon.
Pearl Clark Clow was the wife of the
late Rev. Dr. Jessie James Clow. Rev.
Clow served 27 years as the pastor of
ML Olivet Baptist Church. He retired
in 1963. Rev. John H. Jackson filled the
pulpit following his retirement
Mrs. Clow became a member of the
Highland Baptist Church, pastored by
Rev. Ormond; and, she continued her
membership and ties with both churches
until her death.
Mrs. Clow became active in many
early civil rights women’s organizations
to bring about de-segregation in the
state of Oregon. She, along with 10
other women, staged sit-ins and demon­
strations attempting to change the
separation between races, here in
Portland. She served as president of the
Chu(bh Women United of Portland,
secretary of the Portland Council of
Churches, Church Women United of
Oregon, president of the Oregon
Federation of Women’s Clubs, secretary
of the board of directors of the Downtown
Center YWCA, a board member of the
*. board o f directors of the Portland
Federation of Women’s Organization
and the American Association of
University Women.
