Ç -v / r * •! i*v>; » >4 *î • ■* > ù <•< •ï>> •¡¿M \r ■ t . • ■ Census Bureau interviewers are visiting area residents to collect data on how people spend their money, according to Leo C . Schilling, director of the bureau’s Seattle regional office. The information collected in the Consumer Expenditure Survey is used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to update the market basket of goods and services which contributes to the Consumer Price Index. In addition to their CPI applica tions, consumer expenditure data are used for many research projects. The following graph is based on a recent BLS report for the Consumer Expen diture Survey.__________________ The graph shows that the share of the consum er’s dollar spent on food dropped almost 5 percent from 1980 to 1986. At the same time expenses for vehicles increased. Expenses for gas and motor oil decreased partly because of the reduced cost of these items since 1980. The share of ex penses for housing and insurance increased slightly. Information collected in the Con sumer Expenditure Survey is confi dential by law. Interviewers will pres ent Census Bureau identification. The Census Bureau will collect data on employment and unem ploy ment from area residents the week of January 15-21, according to Leo C. Schilling, director of the bureau’s Seattle regional office. The local data will contribute to January’s national labor force picture to be released February 3 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The data for November 1988 showed a na tional civilian unemployment rate of 5.4 percent. This means that 6.6 million workers out of a labor force of 122.6 million did not have jobs.
