This position required special skills and a very special kind of a per son. Mrs. Beatrice Mott Reed was a member of the Democratic Pre cinct Aid Committee; Enterprise Chapter 1, O.E.S.; lota Phi Lamb da Sorority; a NAACP board member; a Democratic precinct committe woman; and a member of the Saint Phillips Episcopal Church. Mrs. Reed had three daughters Ozie, Jesse and Eunis; and one son, Ellery. She served at Cald w ell’s until her death in July of 1963. She had the position of Funeral Attendant for 36 years. BUT..., it did not stop there! Mrs. Jesse Mott Henson, the daughter of Beatrice Reed, filled her mother’s position and served dutifully until her death. She per formed all the same duties that her mother did from 1969 to 1972. Jesse, also, worked as a waitress by Mattie Ann Callier-Spears rs. Ozie M. Smith’s life was one of devotion, love, com passion and service. The story unfolds back in the late 20s with Mrs. Beatrice Reed. Mrs. Reed lived on Broadway and operated a fur business from her home. In the meantime, she also held down a job with Caldwell’s Funeral Service. Hei job title -‘Lady Attendant’. Her duties were to fix and/or arrange the deceas ed hair for viewing, cosmetics, greeting people at the door, work ing in the family room during the M at ‘Sidney’s Place’ downtown. She had 1 son, Grant (who pre deceased her) and a set of twins, Meg and Derek, and 5 grandchild ren. She spent 4 years at Caldwell’s. During this time, the head of the Caldwell Funeral Service, Mr. Worth Caldwell, Sr., passed in 1966. The building that, now, houses the Caldwell’s Colonial Mortuary was built in 1929 and was oc cupied by the Holman and Lutz Company. It wasn't until 1940 that Mr. Caldwell, Sr. purchased the building that is, today, Caldwell’s Colonial Mortuary. JMMJIMK Mr. Worth Caldwell, Jr. By this m lime. time, Worth, Jr. w was coming up in school and deciding on what path he would take when he grew up. He attended college in Menlo Park, California where he received his Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Business Administra tion. In the late ’30s, he began working with his father, in the family business, on the business end. When his father passed he in herited the business and LOYALTY — that had been passed down from Mrs. Beatrice Mott Reed. From Worth, Jr. (who was the only child) and his wife Barbara, sprang 5 Caldwells — all girls and one boy; Kelley, Julie, Mary, Ann Caren (or A.C.) and Worth, III. The Caldwell name lives on. In 1972, immediately following the death of Mrs. Henson, Mrs. Ozie Mott Smith (sister to Mrs. Henson) became the new ‘Funer al Attendant’. Mrs. Smith was born February 2, 1917 in Wetum pka, Alabama. She moved to Portland with her family as a youngster. She attended Seventh- Day Adventist Grade School and Commerce High School, which is Mrs. Ozie M. Smith now Cleveland High School. She attended the University of Wash ington and graduated in 1944 with a Certified Degree in Physio- Therapy. Mrs. Smith worked as an in dependent physiotherapist for more than 40 years. She would go to the client’s homes. Many of her clients lived in the Healy Heights area, which is in Southwest Port land. She, simultaneously, work ed as an attendant for Caldwell’s Colonial Mortuary for more than 16 years; while maintaining her other job. Ozie M. Reed met and married Mr. Wilson W. Smith, Jr. To their union, one boy and one girl were born; Wilson, III and Lula. Ozie was very active in several social groups - the Oregon/Wash ington Football Club, the Jack and Jill Association of America and The Group (an organization that formed with only female members who met for the sole purpose of getting together to do things without the presence of their husbands). Mrs. Smith was a devoted wife and a loving mother and grand mother, but, more than that, she was a very strong Christian — whose faith was unwavering. In 1986, Mrs. Smith retired. “ She was the first of them all to retire” says Mr. Caldwell ..." but, the most interesting and ironic of them was how much they all look ed alike and even wore their hair alike.” “ I love my mother very much, but, my brother (Wilson) had a ■ Continued to Page 7 COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS REBECCA COURT #4 HEROINES OF JERICHO presents ‘A Roast and Toast of Worthy Joshua, T.V.
