V ic to r Brow n, pastor of C o m m u n i­ ty C hurch o f God, w as the speaker o f the evening; Friday night, Rev. M ilto n Green, pastor o f the Bethel AME church, w as the speaker o the evening. On Saturday, everyone enjoyed the “ Annual A nniversary Ban­ q u e t” guest s o lo is t M rs. M AC Spears. All persons w ho w ere m em bers of the church from 20 years on up to 43 years, w as honored. The C o m m u n ity C hurch of God held an Appreciation Service for Pastor Victor R. She was astonishe d by the absence of any c u ltu ra l item s, such as: pictures, figureines, and- the-like. “ T his w as a B lack home, very w ell kept; but, there was no representation o f that fa m ily ’s heritage s ittin g o u t in plain view. W hat I saw were little fig u rin e s w ith b londe hair and b o u ffa n t dresses.” She w ent on to say “ We, as parents, should bring our ch ild re n to the aw areness of w hat th e ir cu ltu ra l heritage is. T his should begin in the hom e. D o n ’t w ait u n til the c h ild gets to the classroom . And, parents, d o n ’t re lin q u ish that right to any in­ s tru c to r." Mrs. H arris shared a w ealth of know ledge. “ O nce a c h ild begins to learn, it changes th e ir a ttitu d e s about w hat they can and cannot achieve in life. If pim p in g and drug s e llin g is all they have to ie a m — then, th a t’s w hat they w ill learn. If our c h ild know s that there are black doctors, e le ctricia n s, d e n tists, and astronauts; then, they w ill see that they can achieve. The sky is the lim it!" F o llo w in g the guest speaker, Mrs. Elaine H arrison gave a slide presentation. "T here is a new c u r­ riculum being u tilize d and taught th is y e a r— C o g n itive T hinking S k ills ’. The program has 6 to 7 units, w h ich are self regulating. One o f the m ain d ire ctive s is that it requires the c h ild to rem em ber sequences ... p u ttin g th in g s in order.” Then she shared, w ith the parents, the new gam e that the c h ild re n love th is y e a r— the ‘Busy Bee Game*. “ T his gam e helps the c h ild learn how to fo llo w in s tru c tio n s .” The teacher’s day begins at 7:00 a.m. each day and the s tu ­ dent begins at 9:00 a.m. “ W hen a ch ild arrives early, o r on tim e, he has the o p p o rtu n ity to have m ore tim e d u rin g th e ‘ Free T im e' period” as she w e n t on. The slide show drew m uch la u g h te r from the assem bled group. One parent asked “ W hat is that that the ch ild re n are d o ing?” Mrs. H arrison answ ered, “ They are playing a new gam e called ‘The P endulum ’. Its a gam e that J e ff­ ery brought back from O M S I." The parent replied, “ My son ju s t M R S C ’ S W IG S game. loves that gam e He w as trying to explain it to me. N ow I know w hat he was talking ab o u t.” T his was the m ost e n tertainin g and the m ost tasty O pen H ouse I’ve ever attended. Before the guest speaker began, everyone w ent in to the k itch e n area and prepared for them selves a bow l of Creole Gumbo or a plate o f a C hicken and Rice d ish that tasted so good that it w o u ld m ake you slap your M am m a dow n. M-m-m- m good! It was prepared by one of the teachers, Arm ande Loiseau. There ere w as salad, punch, cake, nuts, candy and c h ip -n ’-dip on th e w ell dressed table. A plague w as pre­ sented to Mr. Carl Johns fo r his volunteered services to the day care fa c ility .
