He passed this life on Satur­ day, Oct. 1,1988 He leaves to cherish his mem­ ory a loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Susie Patterson of the home, two daughters, Mrs. Beverly Boyd and Mrs. Dianne Jones of the city; two sons, Donald L. Anderson and Gary Patterson of the city; two sisters, Mrs. Irene P. Cranford and Mrs. Verna L. Williams, both of the City. Two daughter-in-laws, Mrs. Gail Patterson & Alice Ander­ son. Grandchildren: Tonya and Wendy Patterson; Robert, Rhonda and Tracy Boyd; Kimberly, Susan and Donald Anderson III; Jennifer & Michelle Jones, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Charles Patterson August 2, 1914 - October 1, 1988 Mr. Charles Patterson, born Aug. 2, 1914 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The second child born to the Union of Mr. and Mrs. Sam­ uel Patterson. The family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1920. Mr. Patterson attended the Sell­ wood and Holladay Elementary Schools and graduated from Benson High School where he ex­ celled in both his studies as well as basketball. He attended the Southern Oregon Normal School in Ashland, Oregon and later at­ tended the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. He was an outstanding basketball star at University of Oregon in 1936. He was the first Black player in the Northern Division. At Benson High School he was considered the best High School center in the state. At the U of O he was known as the Brown Bomber. Howard “ Hobby” Hobson a former coach at the U of O considered Charlie one of his greatest players of all time. At a time when it was ex­ tremely difficult for Black people in sports. Mr. Patterson later played pro­ fessional basketball with the Bell­ ingham Cougars in Bellingham, Wash, and with the Harlem Globe Trotters. He worked for a while as a Red Cap and later he worked for seven years with the United Postal Service. He has retired after 20 years serving as an Accountant for the State of Oregon, Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Patterson was involved in a number of Civic Organizations: The NAACP, The Urban League, He is a member of the Challenger Bridge Club, American Bridge Association Affiliate, Board of Directors, Sunshine Division, Past President of Ex-News Boy Association, The Oregon-Wash­ ington Football Club, a member of Enterprise Lodge #1 F& A M of ' Oregon, Prince Hall Affiliate. The first task that they had to do, was to remove the old roofing. 110 yards of roofing was shoveled off of the roof and replaced with a new roof. This project was started in August and was completed the last of September, 1988!
