une fourth, 1988 is a date that
Zachary R. Harris will always
remember.
Zachary came to Portland four
(4) years ago from Hartford, Con
necticut trying to make a decision
on just what academic subject
would become his major course
of study. He attended Portland
Com m unity College Cascade
where he majored in General Stu
dies and was active in the basket
ball program for one (1) year.
He was, then, recruited by the
Western Baptist College, of Sa
lem, Oregon, to play basketball.
When Zachary attended West
ern, he chose to major in Busi
ness Education to complete the
requirements for his business.
Zachary is an accomplished
musician, songwriter, and record
producer. He has done studio
work with Melba Moore in New
York. He wrote “ Don't Go Away,"
for Melba Moore and the NAJEE
album entitled “ NAJEE's Thing,”
which made gold, Zachary arrang
ed the background vocals, rhythm
and percussion sections.
He, also, wrote the title cut on
the recently released gospel al
bum entitled “ AMAZING." The
songs on the album are being
sung by the choir Kingdom.—The
choir is from Hartford, Connec
ticut. The second song on the al
bum, "As One,” being led by his
brother Rev. Rahni Harris, was al
so written (lyrics and music) by
Zachary Harris.

Zachary spent 3 years at West
ern Baptist College. He was a two
(2) year letterman in Varsity Bas
ketball and he served as the Sen
ior Captain of the basketball
team.
On the fourth (4th) of June,
Zachary R. Harris became the first
Afro-American individual to ever
graduate from Western Baptist
College in Salem, Oregon. He
received a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Business Management.
In addition to all these wonder
ful happenings, Zachary became
a husband (for the very first time)
to Miss Tracey N. Clay, daughter
of the well-known singer —
Shirley Anette, on Saturday June
11th at 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon.
The wedding was held at the
Maranatha Church and the cere
mony was performed by his elder
brother Rev. Rahni Harris.
Zachary is presently using his
degree to manage their publish
ing company (ZAC-TRAC MUSIC,
INC.). He also works for the NIKI
Corporation.
His long term goal is to man
age a sporting goods store and, in
due time, become a full-time pro
ducer of music; which is his first
love.

Bethel AME Church began as
a small group in the home of
Brother Phillip Jenkins in the year
1889, here in the city of Portland.
The first pastor, Rev. S.S. Free
man, came from Pasadena, Cali
fornia and served from 1889 to
1901, the year President William
McKinley was killed. This infor
mation was recalled and contri
buted by the daughter of Rev.
Freeman, Mrs. Clifford Dixon.
The church moved several
times, but, the move to North Lar
rabee and McMillen Streets was a
memorable day in the history of
the church. It was there that a
basement was built in 1915 where
the congregation worshipped un
til the second floor sancturary
was added in 1922.
The inevitable push of progress
has again dictated a move of the
church. For members of the con
gregation who remember the
pride and the joy of building their
own church, the future holds a
challenge. They look to God to
find a way that will somehow
weld the sentimental ties of the

past with inevitable progress of
the future.
In 1959 the present edifice was
completed under the pastorate of
the Reverend Harley Akers, who
served the congregation from
1954 until 1962. The approximate
cost of the present building and
grounds was $150,000.
In a memo from the Rev. Akers
to his congregation, he wrote:
“ For four and one-half (4-1/2)
years we have been happily asso
ciated with this congregation.
Each year the association has
grown stronger with our mutual
Christian thoughts and desires.
We are truly a blessed people as
we stand on the threshold of en
tering a new house of worship,
dedicated to God and to service
of His people.”
"This accomplishment has not
been an altogether an easy one
and there are yet many tasks as
signed to all our hearts and
hands. Yet our faith is undaunted,
our determination secure and our
togetherness absolute.”
