Geraldine Elizabeth Hammond
— a long-time resident of Port­
land — currently resides in
Salem, Oregon.
Mrs. Hammond is employed
w ith the Salem/Kaiser School
D istrict as an adm inistrator who
is coordinator of theM igrant Edu­
cation, Indian Education and
Chapter I programs.
She has been the principal of
the follow ing schools: Rosedale
Elementary and Pringle Elemen­
tary Schools, Salem; Woodlawn,
Rice and W ilcox Elementary
Schools, Portland. She was also
the Curriculum Coordinator with
Portland Public Schools at High­
land Elementary School, and she
taught second grade at Highland
(which is now Martin Luther King
Elementary School).
Mrs. Hammond was the first
African-Am erican Tele-Teacher
in the Northwest. Her program,
the “ Miss Geri Show", was seen
on KBPS TV for two years — with
her little puppet friends She
wrote and developed her own
materials. The “ Miss G eri" tapes
are still being used on closed cir­
cu it for primary grade students
Geraldine Elizabeth Hammond
She graduated from Dillard
University in New Orleans, Loui­
siana, with a Cum Laude degree
in Education (at the tender age of
17). Her graduate degrees are in
Administration, Clinical Psycho­
logy and Curriculum Develop­
ment. She did post graduate work
at the Nova University in Florida
where she was involved in the
Doctorate program.
She is a member of the follow ­
ing organizations: Alpha Kappa
Alpha S orority; Delta Kappa
Gamma Sorority; Steering Com­
mittee, Salem Area, Jesse Jack-
son Campaign; Red Cross Volun­
teer; co-leader for the Senior
High Youth of Morningside Me­
thodist Church, Salem.
She is the mother of two sons:

Her philosophy: “ It is the the
job for all support persons to help
individuals to reach their fullest
potentials through education,
love, financial assistance; espe­
cially our youth. This I see is the
responsibility of the church,
schools, the family and in stitu ­
tions that impact the lives of the
youth of today.”
Japhena Hall, R.N.
Edna M. Robinson, long­
time resident and com­
munity organizer, is con­
cerned with the North/
Northeast community
and its residents, and
shares their concerns of
employment opportuni­
ties and crime protec­
tion within the communi­
ty-

Japhena Hall has been em­
ployed with Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of Oregon for 13years, and
currently holds the title of Super­
visor of Hospital Audits.
She began here career with
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of
Oregon in the Medicare Depart­
ment as Inpatient Claims Review­
er. In 1976 she was transferred to
Medical Affairs. She was promo­
ted toSenior Hospital Review Co­
ordinator in 1979 and became
Supervisor of Hospital Audit in
1984. She has served on the cre­
dit union board for 6 years.
Japhena is married to Alex­
ander Hall, Jr., and is the mother
of four and grandmother of one.
She is a member of Sharon Se­
venth Day Adventist Church. Her
hobbles include reading, playing
the piano, singing and bowling.
Japhena enjoys working with
people in any capacity.
Japhena has been a resident of
Portland for approximately 30
years.
Kaiser Selects 1987
Employee of the Year
Myra Faison, interim super­
visor of adm itting was selected
one of Kaiser Medical Center's
1987 Employees of the year.
According to Lorna Bunker,
director of volunteers for the
medical center, nominations are
received from patients, staff and
visitors for selection of an em­
ployee of the month. From the
employees of the month an em­
ployee of the year is chosen. She
was selected for her friendliness
to v is ito rs , p a tie n ts , fe llo w
employees and hard work and de­
dication to her job."
In her 14 years at the medical
center, Faison has worked in a
variety of positions w ithin the ad­
m itting department. She likes
the challenge and variety found
in admitting. “ You deal w ith a lot
of people who want help or need
information right away.”

for employee of the year, says
Bunker. Myra knows her job well
and is pleasant to everyone.
