The 1988 Sony Innovators have been chosen from a field of Black artists recommended by the nation's major recoring companies. In Sep tember, a panel of three distin guished judges from the music in dustry selected nine finalists from all nominations received. YORK — bony Corporation of America has announced that arranger-producer-composer Quin cy Jones and renowned jazz and rock artist Herbie Hancock have selected the tw o recipients of the Sony Innovators Awards for 1988. A new initiative of Sony Corpor ation of America, the Sony Innova tors Program honors up-and- coming Black artists in film, tele vision and music. In this first year of the program, the Sony Innovators selected by Mr. Jones and Mr. Han cock are talented performers in the field of music. The 1988 Sony Innovators will be announced at a gala event in New York on March 1. They will also be seen and heard in Sony advertising in the coming months. "I'm glad to see a major corpora tion like Sony reaching out to give Black performing artists a chance for recognition before national audi ences," said Quincy Jones. "I clearly remember what it's like to be out there struggling just to be heard." Quincy Jones has set a standard matched by few individuals in music. He is considered by many to be a musical genius, having played nearly every imaginable role — com poser, record producer, artist, ar ranger, conductor, and master in ventor of musical hybrids. He is noted for such blockbuster produc tions as "W e Are The W orld" and Michael Jackson's "Thriller," the highest-selling album of this de cade. He also produced Jackson's current hit album "b a d," and he is now working on another major re cording. "I'm happy to be associated with the the project because it's a unique step by a major company to foster the growth of musical talent in our young Black artists." Herbie Hancock is known for his work with Miles Davis and the intro duction of the synthesizer to his jazz works. His latest album, "Future Shock," hit the top of the Pop, R&B and Dance charts and went gold. It was also a major music video success. In 1986, Mr. Han cock scored and co-starred in the highly acclaimed film "Round Mid night," which won the 1986 Aca demy Award for Best Score. He also composed scores for "A Sol dier's Story" and "Jo Jo Dancer." "Having Mr. Jones and Mr. Han cock participate in the Sony Innova tors Program is truly a first-class honor," said Jeff Brooks, Sony vice president of Advertising.
