Page 8, Portland Observer, January 20, 1988 Portland Indoor — World Class Track in Our Backyard by Fred Hembry On January 23rd, 1988, the doors of the Portland Memorial Coliseum will open for amateur track and field competitors, both youth and adult, to display their talents. For those who are not aware, some of these aspiring participants will be of the National-World Class stature. Among them will be Robin Marks (Olympic hopeful, 1988) of Portland, Al Joyner (U.S. Gold Medalist, Triple Jump), and Steve Scott (U.S. Record Holder in the 1500), to name a few. The Portland Indoor has been part of the "Grand Prix" Indoor Track & Field circuit since 1987. This means national-class athletes must run in Portland, Los Angeles, or other designated meets to qualify for the National Championship meet at Madison Square Garden later this winter. In turn, you, the spectator, will be guaranteed viewing of national track figures, as well as college and high school standouts. There will be two meets that day. The develomental meet begins at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 5:00 p.m. The night meet begins at 7:30 p.m. It is in this meet that you will see the national-class athletes and the high school standouts. I contacted three area coaches to get their thoughts on the meet and their athletes. They do have partici pants in all events, but space per mitted me to list only their hardest working athletes. Mark Cotton from Grant High School has entered Bill Sheppard in the 55 Meters Dash for mend, and K.K. (miriam) Waller in the w o men's 55 Meter Dash. "I look on the Indoor as a circus of sorts that allows us to display our talent. I also feel that we should do well," he told me. Alex Wright from Lincoln High School has entered James Rankin in the men's 800 Meters and Liz Fawkes in the women's 800. Coach Wright said, "I also have Mary Mac Donald (W 800-1500), and the Dunn twins (M 1500). My people are in credibly fit, and we should do well in both meets, should they qualify." "This meet affords the P.I.L. and athletes around Oregon to show case their talent. The meet is very well-run and the national standing allows record-breaking times (Na- tional/World) to be official," com mented Leon Lincoln from Madison High School. He is entering Bobby Frazier in the men's 55 Meter Dash. Debora Booth will be entered in the women's 55 Meter dash. In light of this, anyone who breaks their normal sports-watching routine to view this event is sure to enjoy a full day of exciting track and field competition, covering the entire range of age and develop ment. Come out and support your local athletes!
