HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST VISITS
PORTLAND
By: Avel Gordly
Human rights activist Dr. Mildred McClain-Coleman believes that, “ it is
crucial that Black people and other Third World people become more in
volved in what is happening in Nicaragua. . . Black people in the U.S. are not
speaking out because of a lack of understanding of what is at stake in
Nicaragua." McClain-Coleman spoke these words several times, to different
audiences, during her recent Portland visit, November 11-16.
A dynamic speaker, McClain-Coleman has a doctorate in education from
Harvard, is currently Project Director of the Georgia Coalition on Hunger and
serves as organizer for the Witness for Peace, Atlantic Coast project in
Nicaragua. Her Portland trip came just 10 days after her most recent journey
to the Atlantic Coast, as part of an African American delegation which she
organized While in Portland she encouraged more local activism in the Black
Community around the issue of U.S. involvement in Central America; sought
recruits for future delegations; and supported the work of a few local activists
who have been raising the issue in Black and Latino Communities.
McClain-Coleman argued convincingly to her audiences against U.S. aid
to the Contras. She cited the fact that the people of the Atlantic Coast, where
there is a sizable Black population, “ want to raise their children in peace."
This was the message she shared as she spoke with the aid of moving
slides of children and families involved in everyday life. Her audiences
included children at the Black Educational Center, a Black United Front
meeting and students at the Whitney Young Learning Center. In addition, she
spoke to a group of Black women representing several organizations and to
some activists in the Latino community.
One of the highlights of McClain-Colemans visit was a presentation to the
Roosevelt High School Student Council. The council has been engaged in a
debate about whether to allow Coca-Cola machines to remain on campus in
the face of a national boycott, which has been called by the Coke Campaign
in Atlanta, Georgia. McClain-Coleman was the first coordinator of the Coke
Campaign and was able to help some of the Roosevelt students gain a
deeper understanding of the reasons for the boycott.
Her trip was sponsored by Witness for Peace with assistance from the
American Friends Service Committee and the Black United Front.
