Encore Performance
PassinArt: A Theatre Company will present a special pre Artquake
performance of "S plit Second" by Dennis McIntyre at the Interstate Fire
house Cultural Center, 5340 N. Interstate, on Saturday, August 29th at
8:00 p.m.
"Split Second” is a compelling drama that depicts the experiences ot
a young Black police officer when faced with the consequences of one of
his "split second" decisions. A decision that not only impacts his life, but
that of his family. The play takes a hard look at the differences between
the values of the young police officer and that of his father, a retired police
man; and what happens to a family when they find themselves suddenly
caught up in the "tragedy" of a "split second" decision.
"S plit Second" will be directed by Michael Grant, and cast members in
elude Henry Melson, Julie Serquinia, Gunnar Forland, Anthony Baggette,
Michael Holiday, and Neal Thomas.
For reservations, call 299-7180 or 243-7930.

Black Artistis Clean Up
Last Friday tickets went on sale for the Whitney Houston/Jonathan
Butler show at the Memorial Coliseum on Oct. 12th. Over 8000 seats were
available. On Monday there were only 2300 seats left. This makes this
show one of the fastest selling, or maybe sold out, shows in Portland his
tory. Portlander's are known for buying tickets at the last minute, so this
is highly unusual for the Rose City. Congratulations to not one but two
BLACK artists coming into a city that doesn't even have a 24-hour R&B
station. Hint, hint!!

Two Saturdays ago at Jefferson High, God seemed to intervene with
mother nature so that the Black United Front's 8th Annual Community
Unity Day could go on undaunted by the seemingly unavoidable rain.
Though the attendance was poor and the event got a late start, the enter
tainment was top-notch, and all acts gave 100%. They included vocalist
Kevin Morse, The Untouchable Krew, Mike B. & Crew, Ray Tellis and
Friends, and one of the city's most popular bands. Cool 'R. The late start
prohibited Billy Larkin and Co. and The Flirt Band from performing, how
ever we salute them all, along with Fantasy Unlimited Enterprises who pro
duced the entertainment part of Community Unity Day. Fantasy expressed
thanks to B.E.A.N. who acted as a consultant (and produced the previous
five) and all of the members of the B.U.F. for the opportunity and the sup
port. The Portland Observer salutes all who were involved and wish all
continued success.
