Nominations and applications are invited for the position o f
Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at Michigan
State University, a comprehensive graduate research University.
The University comprises fourteen colleges with an enrollment
o f 41,000 including 7,500 graduate and professional students
enrolled in both masters and doctoral programs. The annual
research budget is about $70 m illion. Michigan State University
is a member o f the Association o f American Universities, the
National Association o f State Universities and Land-Grant
Colleges and the American Council on Education. The Vice
President tor Research and Graduate Studies reports to the
President and shares with the Provost oversight o f The Grad
uate School, and o f Lifelong Education Programs.
I he person to fill this important position w ill lead the future
development o f research and graduate programs at Michigan
State University, and should possess the following qualities:
A background o f successful administrative leadership;
A record o f outstanding research, nationally recognized
leadership in his/her field;
• Demonstrated ability to negotiate and obtain funding for
research and graduate education programs;
• Sensitivity toward and ability to deal with diverse groups
representing faculty, students, industry, business, govern
ment and the community;
• Commitment to affirmative action in graduate education/
research.
Specific Responsibilities Include
• Strategic planning tor research and graduate studies;
• facilitatio n and oversight o f faculty and student research
and scholarly activity;
• Oversight of graduate education (jo in tly with the Provost);
• Administrative oversight o f the Dean o f the Graduate
School (jo in tly with the Provost) and o f the Assistant Pro
vost tor Lifelong Education Programs (jo in tly w ith the
Provost), two assistant vice presidents and staff;
• Supervision o f special units, currently the Center for
Environmental Toxicology, the Office o f Radiation, Chemi
cal and Biological Safety, the Laboratory Animal Care
Service, the Industrial Development Institute, the Technol
ogy Transfer Center and the MSU Museum.
ODOT has 16 jobs bidding on August 27, 1987.
10 of which have D/WBE Goals. The ODOT staff
have gotten very aggressive in their goal setting, and
should be commended for the positive improvement.
This means there should be a greater number of
opportunities for you to secure contracts. There are
several smaller projects this bid opening so it will be
a good time for some of the smaller firms or those
new to highway work to get involved.
PTS has scheduled plan reading and bidding assi
stance for the following projects.

gon Coast Highway, 9 miles N. of Gold Beach. Esti
mated $1,000,000. - $2,500,000. 5% DBE 0% WBE.
We will be in a meeting room at Jot's Motel, West
end of Rogue River Bridge, Gold Beach, OR, August
26, 1987, 10:00 a.m. -12:00 noon.
WASHINGTON COUNTY Roy Circle - Cornelius
Pass Road located NE Hillsboro.
Estimated
$2,500,00.-$5,000,000. 12% DBE 2% WBE.
We will be in the conference room at PTS August
21, 1987, 10:00-4:00, 901 S.E. Oak, No. 108 Port
land, OR 97214.
This project should be of particular interest to all
electrical firms as it has a considerable amount of
electrical construction.
