All A m ericans could be b etter
off if more Americans got a better
education.
The Fund has provided first rate
educations for many thousands of
deserving young people, many of
whom required both remedial and
financial support Nine out of every
ten of the 45,000 students on UNCF
campuses require some financial
help in order to go to school.
In 1984, the UNCF raised $30.7
million, with 35 percent coming
from the business community. The
Fund has long demonstrated the
capacity for saving young minds
th at might have been lost to both
discrimination and indifference.
These minds include Daniel “Chap
pie” Jam es, the first black, four-
star Air Force General and Ar
lington Finley, a Philip Morris inor
ganic chemist in Richmond, VA
Others on the long list of “Amer
ican heroes” who have graduated
from the Fund’s 43 predominantly
black colleges are Leontyne Price,
the opera star, Frank Yerby, the
novelist, Sharnia “Tab” Buford,
President of New York’s Freedom
National Bank, Dr John Hope
Franklin, the noted historian and
Lionel Richie, the singer/song writer
Each of the current mayors of At
lanta, Birmingham, New Orleans
and Washington, D.C. are also
UNCF alumnae. It would seem to
be an investment th at’s paying off
for all Americans.
