Student Wins Scholarship Award
Samuel J. du Plessis, a Portland State University senior, is one of fifteen
winners chosen nationally of the 1987 GrandMet/National Urban League
Essay Scholarship Contest. The scholarship award is $1,000.
This is the twelfth year GrandMet and the National Urban League has
cooperated on this national scholarship contest, which is open to entering
college freshmen or undergraduate college students attending accredited
institutions of higher learning. Each year one topic is selected, and all appli
cants submit essays of 500 to 1,000 words. This year's topic was "How
Can Business, Community and School Increase the Minority Student Gra
duation Rate from High School and College7
" If there has been a search for a single motivating factor to succeed in my
studies, it can be attributed to being a winner in the 1987 National Urban
League-GrandMet U.S.A., Inc. essay contest. This is a first for me, and I
thank the Portland- and National Urban League organizations for this grand
award. Efforts such as these are of immense value to minority students and

The GrandMet/National Urban League Essay Competition is an annual
event. Interested persons must be an entering college freshman or under
graduate college student who will be attending an accredited institution
of higher learning during the year of application.
Entries must address in 500 to 1,000 words the selected theme for the
year. Selection is based on content, originality, organization, style, gram
mar, spelling, punctuation, and neatness.
Announcements regarding the competition are released in January of
each year. Additional information can be secured from Brenda Polk, the
Urban League of Portland, 280-2600.

“My little girl was about the same age my granddaughter is now.
“I’d had some cleaning fluids under the sink and Sally must
have gotten into them while I was upstairs.
“When I found her, she was sitting on the kitchen floor, holding
one of those bottles. And acting mighty sick. I called,the doctor over in
Corvallis, but just kept on getting a busy signal.

“So I did the only thing I could think of. I called the operator.
She just took over and cut in on the line and asked if the .doctor was in
and he was. She put him on. And just that quick he told me what to do.
“These days, of course, the doctors all have something called
‘Call Waiting’ so they know if you’re trying to get through. Why they can
even check your vital signs, right over the phone.
“But whatever miracles the phone company comes up with
next I’ll always be grateful for that operator.
