Last Wednesday at the Starry Night, Ray Charles along with his orche
stra and The Raylettes played to two standing-room-only crowds. Once
again, I have to say where were you Black residents of the Rose City?
I guess that I'll have to remind you that Ray Charles is one of the pioneers
in mainstreaming Black music. In other words, SHOW YOUR RESPECT
SOMETIMES! Ray Charles, was one of the first modern-day entertainers
to play in concert halls where Black entertainment had never been featured

Monday night against a background of armed security guards and a"'Port-
style metal detectors, 5200 kids managed to be kids and enjoy the RUN/
DMC & Beastie Boys "Together Forever" show. Never in the life of this
reporter has there been such an overreaction to such a minor threat. On
top of costing the taxpayers who knows how many dollars (for everything
from mounted police to undercover detectives), this is a prime example o
the racial misconceptions in this country. (Suppose Bernard Goetz had

On May 30th, Vernellia Ruth Randall graduates from Northwestern
School of Law, Lewis and Clark College. She has a B.S. in Nursing and
a M.S. in Community Health Nursing. She practiced 10 years in Alaska
as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She is a member of the Minority Law
Student Association, Women's Law Cacus and Parents-in-Law. Ms. Ran
dall has been elected to the Cornelius Honor Society by the faculty. After
graduation she will practice with Bullivant, Houser, Bailey, Pendergrass
& Hoffman. She is the only 1987 Black graduate.
She is the single parent of two sons Tshaka (age 16) and Issa (age 9).
She is the daughter of Ernest and Grace Randall, Portland.
