Multnomah County Legal Aid Service will be celebrating fifty (50) years
of legal services to the poor on Friday, June 12, 6:30 p.m., at the Melody
Lane Ballroom, 615 S.E. Alder. The first legal aid office formally opened its
doors on February 15, 1936, under the sponsorship of the Multnomah
County Bar Association. A number of lawyers, including the late Judge
Gus Solomon, helped to organize the efforts to establish legal services to
the poor in Oregon.
The dinner committee for the anniversary celebration includes Governor
Goldschmidt, Senator Hatfield, Representatives AuCoin and Wyden, and a
number of state senators, representatives and bar leaders. The anniversary
dinner will be attended by former staff members and private attorneys who
have contributed to the success of legal aid over the past fifty years. It will
be an opportunity to review the accomplishments of Multnomah County
Legal Aid, which has been recognized as one of the best legal aid programs
in the country.
For more information, contact Lou Savage, Executive Director, Multno
mah County Legal Aid Service, 224-4086.

"Community Resources for Can
cer Patients, Families and Others
Who Care," Wednesday, June 24,
7 p.m., Discovery Center, Tigard, is
the topic for discussion in the se
cond session of the new health
education program co-sponsored by
Meridian Park Hospital and the Am
erican Cancer Society as an effort
to provide appropriate health care
information to the community.
Linda Pedersen, R.N., from Meri
dian Park Hospital will discuss the
various co nmunity resources avail
able to cancer patients, their fami
lies and friends, or anyone inter
ested in assisting those with cancel.
For additional information, con

partment at the Tualatin hospital.
Sponsored by the American Jew
ish Committee, Rabbi Yosefe Ha-
dane was in Portland recently to
discuss life among African (Ethio
pian! Jews now living in Israel.
The thirty-seven (37) year old Rabbi
is on a nationwide speaking tour
and at Congregation Neveh Shalom
in Southwest Portland, Rabbi Ha-
dane talked about Ethiopian Jewry
and current events among the
approximately 16,000 Ethiopians liv
ing in Israel.
Spiritually led by Rabbi Hadane,
the Ethiopians that are now Israeli
citizens, and the remaining Ethio
pian Jews (not let by Rabbi Ha
dane) residing in Africa have been
adhering to the tenets of Judaism
for thousands of years. Addition
ally, Ethiopian Jews living outside of
Israel, it is anticipated, will event
ually arrive in the City of Jerusalem,
which is considered a "holy" place.
A fairly comprehensive discussion
in a short period of time, the Rabbi
shared the following highlights:
• There is a great deal of concern
related to the separation of families.
Many Ethiopians in Israel have fam
ily members in Ethiopia that they
sadly miss.
• Ethiopian Jews that have re
mained in Ethiopia are not being
mistreated by the Ethiopian govern
ment.
• Ethiopians in Israel are going
through stages of "culture shock"
and were surprised to learn that
some Jews do not strictly follow
the teachings of Judaism.
• It is believed the best way for
Ethiopians to function is to become
fully integrated into Israel's society.
• There appears to be no racism
from Rabbi Hadane's point of view.
• After his formal presentation,
Rabbi Hadane conversed in Hebrew
with one of the community's Black
youth, who is 15 years old and living
in Northeast Portland.
• Contrary to some thinking that
Ethiopians are concentrated in a
specific area of Israel, they are fairly
well disbursed throughout the coun
try.
• There is a need to train and
