W hen Mary McLeod Bethune was seeking contributions to open a small school lor underprivileged Blacks in Day tona Beach in 1904. a would-be trustee took one look at the ramshackle schoolhouse and asked where the school was. The Black woman replied: “ In my mind, and in my soul? The man, naturally, gave a healthy contribution and shortly thereafter her school opened. Mary’s dream was realized. In no time at all, with funds raised by music programs she organized herself, the dream flourished.
