Mary McLeod Bethune
A woman who kept the faith.
W hen Mary McLeod Bethune was seeking contributions to open a small school lor underprivileged Blacks
in Day tona Beach in 1904. a would-be trustee took one look at the ramshackle schoolhouse and asked where
the school was. The Black woman replied: “ In my mind, and in my soul? The man, naturally, gave a
healthy contribution and shortly thereafter her school opened. Mary’s dream was realized. In no time at
all, with funds raised by music programs she organized herself, the dream flourished. Today, Bethune-
Cook man College numbers thousands of graduates, many of whom have become community leaders.
