Middle Schools Essay Winners Announced

H ilton Award by the City C ounty Advisory Committee on the Disabled, foi
its i om m itm ent to the human rights o f the disabled A special award was
presented to the Cascade A ID S Project for their work, compassion and
« ontrib u tiu n to the well being o f citizens in the education and fight against
AIDS
The nine middle school students were chosen winners of the 1986 87
Harriet Tubman Human Relations Essay Com petition, for w hich the essay
theme was U nifying the United States and the W orld'
Each sixth and
seventh grade winners w ill receive $25, the eighth grade winners w ill re
ceive $50 each
The Harriet Tubman Essay Contest has been held annually since 1980,
it was form ed by the C om m unity Coalition for School Integration Accor
ding to Dr O u | m > Sobomehm education specialist tor the M etropolitan
Human Relations Commission, the primary objectives for the essay con
test «ire to develop .i positive inter racial understanding w ith in the m ulti
cultural m ulti ethnic student bodies at the middle si hoots and to reinfort e
students social and language arts skills
Nine students from Tubman Dexter M cCarty W h ita k e r Markham and
Robert Gray Middle Schools were named winners o f the 1906 87 Hamel
Tubman Relations Essay Com petition

man

The essay winners were announced last Friday during a M etropolitan
Human Relations Award luncheon, held at the Red Lion M otor Inn 310
S W Lincoln At the luncheon Ms Stevie Remington Executive Dire« tor
of the Am erican Civil Liberties Union, was honored w ith the Russel A Pay
ton Human Relations Award
The Award, established in 197? is g iv e n
annually to an individual for their long landing history of human relations
work in the com m unity
The Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center was presented the annual Sonja
Photo Exhibit
"We Drew A
Circle" Opens
In Portland
The 80 photo exhibit will be dis
played at Mall 205. January 19 24
Clackamas Town Center, January
26 31; and W ashington Square.
February 3 8 The exhibit will then
tour the state through March 15
Funded by the Association for Re
tarded Citizens of Oregon, the ex
hibit w ill be sponsored in Portland
by the ARCs of Clackamas. Mult
nomah and W ashington counties
The exhibit was produced by
A ndrew Kilgore of Little Rock, Ar
kansas. to overcom e the attitudinal
barriers faced by people w ith devel
opmental disabilities.
This is the Oregon premiere of
the exhibit w hich has toured the na
tion since its com pletion in 1983
It is touring the state as part o f the
three m onth ARC campaign, "G ood
Neighbors It Takes ALL Kinds "
The cam paign, w hich is sponsored
by the ARC of Oregon and local
ARC chapters, w ill provide inform a
tion about Oregonians w ith mental
retardation and their capabilities

mental retardation for an upcom ing
