DEKUM 286 6479 It’s the year 1987 and the 2,st Century draws nearer everyday These are the times of automatic, automated, and freeze dried Synthetic, syn thesized and programmable We've witnessed Black astronauts. Black conglomerates and even seen a national holiday set aside in honor of a Black man Time has moved and will keep on moving on. but, in spite of a few triumphs, the battle of discrimination and double standards is far from over In the words of Gill Scott Heron. "It's Winter in America " (Literally.) In early December, a Black band was playing at a popular downtown hotel As the word spread among the Black citizens of Portland, Oregon, the normally Caucasian patronage was replaced with a patronage of a dark er hue One evening, as the band played to a capacity crowd, numbers of perspective patrons were turned away due to limited seating As the even mg progressed, the club manager grew desperate and proceeded to ask the minority clientele, both youthful and mature, for identification. This is outrageous, it's true, but this is a clear example of double standards Please don't get angry, fust get smart and be prepared Late December A California based concert company contacts Portland in hopes of booking RUN DMC here enroute to their Seattle concert on New Year's Eve All concert sites or venues turned the offer down cold Why? It’s rumored that the Raising Hell concert tour has been marred by violence, and they do not want to risk a repeat performance in Portland But I ask you to tell me about the violence at Ozzy Osborne, Van Halen and A C /D C concerts, who, along with their demonic overtones and wild be havior. sometimes even encourage their audiences into less than favorable behavior. They are allowed to perform time and time again It's simple double standards On January 8th, the City Council voted thumbs down on the renewal of Fleetwood's liquor license due to complaints from the neighbors on the noise and violence that goes on I have witnessed, personally, what goes on at Fleetwood's, but it doesn't compare with what goes on at the Copper Penny, Hooper’s and other drinking establishments that are still in opera tion The only difference is Black clientele It's up to us to face the fact that we are watched and fudged more severe ly than our fair skinned brothers and sisters, and it is essentially up to us to keep the peace and not give anyone a reason to limit our entertainment or our lifestyle in general Is this giving up? I think not. brothers and sisters This is getting on Never forgetting or giving up the struggle, but bottom line getting what we want and so richly deserve Fistfighting in, on. or around nightc lubs should |ust not he So when you see a friend about to get into a c o n fro n ta tio n you pull him or het aside and school them, take them outside or home-, but do something Dope peddling is also, even if in reputation only enough to close down a place in a twinkling of an eye. let alone using it When I ve seen it I simply tell the participants that I don't appreciate it being done in my presence or at one of my favorite places When I ve made the statement .is if tiy magic the dope disappears So if enough of us take the responsibility and make it not so cool to do. we can also che< k this problem Minors on the premises can close a place down immediately So, please when you see someone you know is under 21, question them, and tell them if they want a place to go when they are 21, to please leave Also, make sure you have your own I D with you, fust in case It's 1987 and high time for progress Realize how few night spots feature live RbB, 0 J or fuke box music It s a very small number Think of how many Black artists came to Portland last year It's a very small number Think of how many RbB radio stations there are It's not even necessary to count There's not even one Wake up Portland' There is something very wrong here I'll bet there's no other city this size in the whole United States that has almost nothing to offer as far as variety I don't like it and I’m not moving I'm going to do what I can to make a positive change, and I and we noed each other's help How about it?
